Selling an old or non-running Maserati Spyder

NHTSA holds a single owner complaint about the Maserati Spyder, on a 2000 model year. What matters more on a 2002-2004 car is the recall record: two campaigns for fuel lines that could leak in the engine compartment, and one for steering bolts that may work loose.

The car, and what was recalled

EPA's data carries the Spyder name from 1989 to 2005. The car most people mean, and the one in the photo, is the 4.2-liter version Wikipedia dates to 2001-2007. Maserati's history says the Spyder and the Coupe took over from the 3200 GT in 2002. Both used a new dry-sump, naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 feeding a transaxle gearbox. Wikipedia lists a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Graziano Cambiocorsa automated manual, and says the cars were built at the Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena. It counts 13,423 cars across the family before the GranTurismo replaced it.

The three recalls all fall on 2002-2004 model years:

  • 03V529 (2002-2004): the notice warns the fuel lines can come apart and leak under the hood; the fix was new lines and attachments.
  • 04V027 (2004): On the Spyder, fuel hoses might soften and pull loose from their metal fittings. Dealers put in grey nylon lines in place of the black metal-and-rubber ones.
  • 04V140 (2002-2004): of four bolts holding the steering assembly, two may lack thread-locking compound and work loose; dealers fitted two new bolts.

The notices describe "certain passenger vehicles," so the campaign counts of 1,982, 1,982 and 2,024 may include other Maserati models. The one complaint, on a 2000, names the steering and reports a crash with an injury; it predates the steering recall's model years.

Selling a Spyder whole

  1. Find the VIN and the version. EPA lists the Spyder, Spider GT, Cambiocorsa and a 90th Anniversary edition.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's stored and whether the tires hold air. A convertible that has sat in a barn for years can still be loaded.
  4. Keep the soft top, wheels and interior with it, and list whatever is gone.
  5. When we collect the Spyder, have an ID and a title showing your name. See after you sell.

Fix it or sell it?

On a 2002-2004, first ask a Maserati dealer to run the VIN and confirm the fuel line and steering bolt work was done. If the car needs more than you want to put in, sitting for years and old project car walk through selling it as it is. For the hardtop version, see the Coupe.

Questions people ask

What did the one NHTSA complaint about the Spyder say?
It is on a 2000 model year, names the steering, and reports a crash with one person injured. Nothing else had been filed by October 10, 2026.
Do the Spyder recall counts include other Maseratis?
They may. The notices say 'certain passenger vehicles', and the counts of 1,982 and 2,024 vehicles are for the whole campaign, not the Spyder alone.
Will you buy a Spyder that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
