A Modena company, founded in 1914
Alfieri Maserati founded the company on 1 December 1914, and it is still headquartered in Modena, Italy. Wikipedia lists its products as luxury vehicles and its parent as Stellantis. Its history runs through a line of owners and leaders, among them Alejandro de Tomaso (1975-1993) and Luca di Montezemolo (1997-2005).
A few changes in that history shaped the cars you see for sale today:
- 1990: the Quattroporte III, sold late in life as the Royale, was discontinued. Wikipedia says that marked the end of Maserati's four-cam V8, a design that went back to the 450S racer and the 5000 GT.
- 1992 to 1994: every model except the Ghibli and the Shamal was dropped.
- 1994: the Quattroporte IV arrived, built on Biturbo underpinnings.
- 2002: the 3200 GT gave way to the Coupe and Spyder. Both carried a fresh 4.2-litre V8, dry sump and no turbos, driving a transaxle gearbox.
- Later: the GranTurismo and GranCabrio replaced the Coupe and Spyder.
Which Maseratis draw the most complaints
Going model by model, we tallied what Maserati owners had reported to NHTSA up to October 10, 2026. These are owner reports to the safety agency, not rulings on how reliable any Maserati is. Few Maseratis are sold, which keeps every figure low.
| Model | Complaints filed with NHTSA |
|---|---|
| Ghibli | 80 |
| Quattroporte | 53 |
| Levante | 31 |
| GranTurismo | 11 |
| Grecale | 10 |
| Spyder | 1 |
| Biturbo, Coupe, MC20, GT2 Stradale | 0 |
The Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans account for 133 of these between them. The Grecale, MC20 and GT2 Stradale are recent arrivals, at 2023, 2022 and 2025 in the EPA list. A recent model year has spent only a short while in owners' hands, so a zero or a 10 there tells you little so far. At the other end, the Biturbo's last EPA year is 1991.
Selling a Maserati that has stopped
On a used Maserati, a single big repair can be worth more than the car. If a quote has you weighing that, our guide for when the repair bill tops the car's value walks through it. A Biturbo or Spyder that has sat half-finished for years fits our old project car guide.
You don't strip anything first. The whole car goes as it is.
- Note the model, year and mileage.
- Tell us plainly how your Maserati is doing. Will the engine turn over, will the wheels roll, and is anything missing or broken?
- Mention the title. No title in hand? Begin with selling a junk car with no title.
- Describe where it is parked, whether that's your garage, the curb or a dealer's service bay.
Pickup is free anywhere in the US. When it's gone, deal with the plates and paperwork.

Questions people ask
- Will you buy a Maserati that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes an Italian sedan that sat after a costly diagnosis. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Why do Maseratis show so few NHTSA complaints?
- Complaint counts follow how many cars are on the road, and Maserati sells in small numbers. With 80 complaints as of October 10, 2026, the Ghibli is on top. The Grecale and MC20 are new to the lineup, and few owners have had time to file reports on them yet.
- Who owns Maserati today?
- Stellantis, according to Wikipedia's Maserati article. The company is still based in Modena, Italy, where it has its headquarters.
