Selling a dead Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive

The car, briefly

These cars belong to the second-generation B-Class, the W246. Wikipedia says it was revealed in August 2011, went into mass production that November in Rastatt, Germany, and was the first vehicle on Mercedes' MFA platform. Our photo shows an earlier gas B-Class from Canada; in the US, EPA lists only the electric one.

What owners reported, year by year

2014: 20 complaints. The electrical system leads with 6, then power train with 5 and engine with 3.

2015: 25 complaints, the most of any year. Power train leads with 7, with fuel/propulsion and engine at 5 each.

2016: 5 complaints, led by the engine with 2. One 2013 complaint, about the air bags, also sits in the file, though EPA lists no 2013 car. Four complaints across all years say the car was towed.

The youngest cars of a model often look cleanest just because they're young. Here even the newest EPA year, 2017, is close to a decade old.

The two recalls

• 15V655000 covers 2014-2015 B-Class Electric Drive cars built November 21, 2013 to May 26, 2015. A communication error inside the electric drive system is the issue. Dealers update the drive system software. The campaign covers 2,618 vehicles.
• 19V787000 is a software fault that can make the emergency call system send the wrong date and time. It covers 2013-2017 Mercedes vehicles across several models, so its 24,226 count is not a B-Class number. The fix came over the air, with dealers checking that it took.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Repair or sell?

Begin by running the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm a 2014 or 2015 got the 15V655000 fix. A free software update is cheaper than any diagnosis.

If a dealer says the battery pack is the problem, read when an EV battery fails before you approve the work. For warning lights and dead modules, see electrical problems. Then weigh the quote against what a working B250e would sell for.

Selling it whole

1. Note the VIN, mileage, and whether the car powers on at all.
2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
3. Tell us where your B-Class sits and if it rolls in Neutral. If it won't come out of Park, mention that too.
4. Leave the charging cable and battery in the car. Say if anything is missing.
5. Our driver will take the keys and title and check your ID. Check after you sell for your state's plate rules.
