Selling a dead or junk Mercedes-Benz SLK
Lights, not engines, lead the SLK's record at NHTSA. Exterior lighting is the component named most in the 418 complaints owners have filed, with 70, and every one of those sits on the 1998 through 2004 model years. We counted SLK owner complaints in NHTSA records on October 10, 2026.

If your SLK won't start, won't pass inspection or just isn't worth another round of repairs, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Three generations, three different records
Per Wikipedia, Mercedes made the SLK from 1996 to 2020 in its Bremen, Germany plant, engine up front and power to the rear wheels. EPA data covers the 1999-2020 model years; NHTSA also has complaints filed under 1998.
R170 (first generation, 1995-2004): lights and wipers
The 1998-2004 model years hold 266 complaints, almost two of every three on file. Exterior lighting is in the top three every year. Visibility also leads the 1999, with 19 complaints, and comes third on the 2001 with 12. No SLK year has more complaints than the 2001 at 76, and service brakes top its list (15).
Two recalls match that pattern:
- 05V505000: the base of a side brake light socket can deform from heat over time on 1998-2004 models. Dealers replace the rear lamp modules. Its 69,278 vehicles may include other Mercedes models.
- 02V152000: the owner's manual on 2000-2002 models lacked the proper headlamp aiming instructions. Owners get inserts. 27,863 vehicles.
R171 (second generation, 2004-2010): air bags
Wikipedia says the R171 was unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show. The 2005-2009 model years hold 115 complaints. Power train leads the 2005 (6) and ties for first on the 2006 (7). From there, air bags take over: 26 of the 2007's 37 complaints and 10 of the 2008's 14.
On 2007-2008 SLKs, the driver frontal air bag inflator modules fall under recall 16V081000. That campaign counts 711,159 vehicles, mostly other Mercedes models plus some Chrysler vehicles, so the number says little about the SLK alone. A much smaller one, 22V168000, fixes control units that may have been updated with incorrect software; its 22 vehicles include a 2007 SLK280 and 2008 SLK350 among other models.
R172 (third generation, 2011-2020): few complaints, small recalls
Wikipedia says the R172 came with inline-four, V6 and V8 engines and offered Magic Sky Control, an electrically tinted sunroof. Cars built from March 2016 were renamed SLC-Class, marking the model's 20th anniversary. The 2012-2020 model years hold just 37 complaints. The 2016 has two complaints and five recall campaigns, most of them small and specific to the SLK300:
- 16V211000: ignition switch backup power wiring on 223 SLK300s with the nine-speed automatic.
- 16V306000: rear tie rod lock nuts on 327 SLK300s built January to April 2016.
- 15V662000: camshafts on 2016 SLK300s built July to August 2015. Its 857 vehicles also include the CLA and GLA.
- 17V308000: stability control software on 2015-2017 SLK and SLC models, 5,818 vehicles.
Earlier, 13V236000 replaced the passenger seat cushion and its occupant sensor on 71 2013 SLKs.
Complaints and recalls by SLK model year
Counted October 10, 2026. Quiet years are grouped; no complaints are filed under 2010 or 2011. A single SLK recall can reach across several model years, which is why the column totals more than 15.

Worth fixing?
Start at NHTSA's recall lookup with the VIN. On a 2007-2008, ask a dealer whether the air bag inflator recall was done.
On a first-generation car, a lamp or wiper problem is rarely the end of it. The real question is everything else that has worn out at that age. Get a single written price for all the repairs and compare it with a running SLK of similar year and miles. If the bill comes close, selling it unfixed makes more sense. Our old or high mileage guide and failed inspection guide cover the usual reasons an SLK gets parked.
How to sell your SLK whole
- Keep handy the VIN, the miles, what broke, and if the folding hardtop still opens and closes.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the SLK is and whether its top is up or down, so the driver can protect it on the haul.
- Don't strip it. The wheels, top and catalytic converter should stay put, and let us know about anything missing.
- When the SLK gets picked up, keep your ID and the SLK title in hand. Each state treats plates its own way; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which SLK years have the most complaints?
- The 2001 is first at 76 on October 10, 2026, next the 1999 at 65, then the 2002 at 41. All three are first-generation R170 cars. Later SLKs have far fewer, and the newest have had less time to collect them.
- Is the 2016-2020 SLC on this page too?
- Yes. Wikipedia says the SLK range was renamed SLC-Class with a facelift for cars built from March 2016. EPA data files the SLC300 and AMG SLC43 under the same model, so their complaints and recalls are counted here.
- Can you pick up an SLK with a dead battery and the roof stuck open?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the roof position and whether the car rolls so the driver can plan the load.
