Selling a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren that won't run

On October 10, 2026, NHTSA records held zero owner complaints for any 2005-2009 SLR McLaren. No other Mercedes-Benz model on this site is at zero. What NHTSA does list are two recalls: one for an alternator that heat could ruin, and one for windshields fitted without primer.

The SLR on paper

Wikipedia describes a front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive grand tourer, built at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England, as a coupe (C199) and a roadster (R199). It runs a hand-built 5.4-litre supercharged all-aluminium V8, the M155. The infobox lists a 5-speed automatic, and the article text names it the AMG Speedshift R.

Production ran from 2003 to 2010. Mercedes announced the end on 4 April 2008. The roadster stopped in May 2009, and the Stirling Moss started production the next month. In EPA data the SLR is a gasoline two-seater sold for 2005-2009.

Known problems by model year

The SLR had one generation, so this groups its EPA years by what NHTSA recorded.

2005-2006: alternators cooked by heat

Recall 06V220 was reported June 19, 2006. NHTSA's defect text says that under hard driving, engine-bay temperature can rise past what the alternator was built for, and the alternator will be damaged. Dealers were to improve cooling for the engine compartment and alternator, fit a modified control unit and install a new alternator, free of charge. The campaign counts 433 vehicles, and that figure may include other models.

On a 2005 or 2006 with a charging warning or a battery that keeps going flat, check the VIN for this recall first. Our electrical problems guide covers the rest.

2007: windshields missing primer

Recall 07V588 was reported December 20, 2007, and covered 3 vehicles. The primer or activator was missing when the windshield went in. Dealers removed each windshield, cleaned it and reinstalled it with both. The recall began January 25, 2008.

2008-2009: nothing on file

No complaints and no recalls appear for these two years.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Complaint counts reflect the NHTSA file as downloaded October 10, 2026. Recalls are vehicle campaigns listed for that year.

A zero only shows what owners chose to report. The later cars spent less time driving before anyone could report them, yet even the newest SLR is now over ten years old.

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Mercedes-Benz dealer about anything open. See open recall for how that works.
  2. Get the fault in writing. A no-start after years in storage is a different job from a failed engine. Our blown engine guide helps sort which you have.
  3. Set the quote beside the car's value once repaired. Repairs cost more than it is worth walks through that choice.

Selling it whole

  1. Describe it: model year, coupe or roadster, any edition name such as Stirling Moss or McLaren Edition, the mileage, and what's wrong.
  2. Say where it sits: a garage, covered storage or a trailer. Say too if it rolls, which tells the driver how to get a low car onto the flatbed.
  3. Leave it complete. Don't pull the wheels, exhaust or interior first. List anything already removed up front; missing parts explains why.
  4. Keep your title and photo ID close at hand. Plates depend on your state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

How many NHTSA complaints does the SLR McLaren have?
None. NHTSA's complaint file held no owner complaints for any 2005-2009 SLR McLaren as of October 10, 2026. That means nobody filed one. It does not prove nothing goes wrong.
Which SLR McLaren model years were recalled?
The 2005 and 2006, under recall 06V220, for alternators that could be damaged by engine-bay heat. And the 2007, under recall 07V588, for windshields installed without primer or activator. Check any VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy an SLR McLaren that doesn't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us the model year, coupe or roadster, any edition name, and where the car is parked.
What is the SLR McLaren Edition?
Wikipedia says McLaren Special Operations announced it in December 2011, after the SLR was discontinued. It was based on every SLR variant except the Stirling Moss, with revised bodywork and interior parts, upgraded steering and suspension parts, and a titanium sports exhaust.
