Selling a damaged Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The SLS AMG's complaint file is nearly one subject. Owners filed 12 complaints with NHTSA through October 10, 2026, and the air bags come up in 11. All 5 recall campaigns that list the car replace a frontal air bag inflator module or the air bag module itself.

The car

Wikipedia says the SLS AMG was built in Sindelfingen from January 2010 to 2014, its 6.2-liter M159 V8 driving through a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch. The coupe has gull-wing doors; the roadster, sold from 2011, has conventional doors and a fabric top. The Black Series ran from 2013 to 2015, and production ended in 2014 with the SLS AMG GT Final Edition. EPA lists US versions from 2011 to 2015.

The air bag recalls, year by year

Every campaign below spans many Mercedes lines. The vehicle totals belong to the full campaign, not to the SLS alone.

  • 16V081000 swaps the inflator in the driver's frontal air bag on 2011-2014 cars. Its 711,159 vehicles include ML, GL, R and E-Class models, and Fiat Chrysler notified its own owners under the same campaign.
  • 16V363000 replaces the passenger frontal air bag module on the 2011 SLS AMG, among C-Class, GLK and E-Class cars. 258,163 vehicles.
  • 17V017000 does the same for 2012 cars. 104,119 vehicles.
  • 18V043000 covers 2013 cars. 132,167 vehicles.
  • 19V010000 names the 2014 SLS AMG Cabrio and Coupe and covers 2011-2014 here. 288,779 vehicles.

The complaints track the recalls: the 2011 has 6 complaints, 5 about air bags, plus 1 about vehicle speed control. The 2012 has 4 and the 2014 has 2, every one naming air bags. None of the 12 reports a crash, fire or injury.

Repair or sell?

Enter the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The air bag replacements are done free at a Mercedes-Benz dealer. Selling with that work still pending? Read selling with an open recall. If the bags have already gone off in a crash, airbags deployed explains what that does to a sale.

Selling an SLS whole

  1. Have the VIN, mileage, and whether it's the coupe or roadster.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it's stored and whether the gull-wing doors still lift. A low two-seater may need a flatbed.
  4. Keep it complete. Missing wheels or body panels change the offer.
  5. The driver will take the title and keys and check your ID. After you sell has the plate rules.

The SLS was followed by the AMG GT. See also the SL-Class and SLR McLaren.

Questions people ask

What are the SLS AMG recalls about?
All five replace a frontal air bag inflator module or the whole air bag module: one on the driver's side for 2011-2014 cars, four on the passenger side across 2011 to 2014. Each campaign also covers other Mercedes models.
Will you buy an SLS AMG after a crash?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us if the air bags deployed and whether the doors still open.
