Selling a dead or junk MINI Cooper
Steering fills more of the MINI Cooper's NHTSA file than any other part of the car. Owners had filed 4,771 complaints on the Cooper by October 10, 2026, and 1,516 of them name steering. The 2005 model year alone holds 843 complaints, and 571 of those are about steering.

Which Cooper is in the data
Wikipedia's MINI Cooper article is about the original Mini, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and built from 1959 to 2000. It made 5.38 million of them, at the Longbridge plant in Birmingham and at plants abroad. The cars in NHTSA's file are the later ones, from the 2002 model year on, plus six complaints filed under 2001. Below, they are grouped by model year.
Each complaint is one owner's report to NHTSA, not a reliability score. Totals for the newest Coopers keep climbing as those cars pile on miles.
Problems owners reported, by era
2002-2006: power steering and the passenger seat sensor
These five model years hold 2,628 complaints, more than half the Cooper's total. From 2002 to 2005, steering leads each Cooper year, rising from 107 complaints in 2002 to 571 in 2005.
Recall 15V660, reported in October 2015, covers 2002-2005 Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks and 2005 convertibles. NHTSA says they may have a temporary or permanent loss of power steering assist. Dealers inspect the electro-hydraulic power steering system and replace parts and wiring as needed. The campaign covers 86,018 vehicles.
On the 2006, air bags take the lead: 198 of 449 complaints. Recall 15V205 replaces the front passenger seat occupant detection mat on 2005-2006 Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks and 2005-2008 convertibles. That campaign counts 91,800 vehicles.
Fire is the third thread. On the 2003, 48 complaints report one. NHTSA's file also records three deaths in Cooper complaints, one each on the 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Two smaller campaigns touch the first years: 02V201, a manual-transmission shift cable that could come loose on the 2002, and 03V086, a rear strut screw whose head could break on the 2003.
2007-2013: turbo engines, water pumps, then wiring
These Cooper years add up to 1,853 complaints. On the 2007 through 2010, the engine leads with 118, 142, 140 and 74. On the 2011 through 2013, the electrical system takes over (72, 55 and 34).
The recalls follow the same path:
- 12V008: the water pump on turbocharged 2007-2011 Cooper S cars, plus JCW, Clubman and Convertible versions. Dealers replace the pump. Its 90,368 vehicles count all of those versions, not only the hatchback.
- 18V248: the electric auxiliary water pump. NHTSA lists it for 2007-2012 MINIs, but the campaign also covers BMW 550i, 750i, X5 and X6 models, so its 47,806 vehicles are not all MINIs.
- 23V337: reported in May 2023 for 2007-2013 Hardtop 2-Door Cooper, Cooper S and JCW cars and 2008-2014 Clubmans. Dealers inspect the sunroof drains, the interior footwell area and the FRM, then replace parts based on what they find. The 97,933 vehicles include the Clubmans.
- 08V657: on 2007-2008 Cooper S cars the tailpipe tip stuck out past the bumper and could touch a person's leg. 28,450 vehicles got a shorter one.
2014-2026: fewer complaints, more campaigns
Thirteen model years hold just 284 complaints together. The 2014 has 49 complaints but 8 recall campaigns. 15V450 says some 2014-2015 Hardtop 2 Door cars did not meet the side-impact standard; dealers add energy-absorbing material between the rear interior side panels and the body (30,456 vehicles). Under 15V628, 2014-2016 Coopers get a new passenger frontal air bag module; the 6,073-vehicle campaign includes the BMW i3 too. 14V619 fixes a spare-wheel nut on 2014 Hardtops.
The electric Cooper SE has its own campaign. 24V612 covers 12,535 2020-2024 Hardtop 2 Door Cooper SE cars whose high-voltage battery or system may short-circuit. And 24V104 replaces the integrated brake system on 2025 MINIs, but its 266,716 vehicles span BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce.
Complaints and recalls, year by year
Tallied from the NHTSA complaint file we downloaded on October 10, 2026. "Recall campaigns" counts the NHTSA campaigns tied to each Cooper year. Many Cooper recalls span several model years, so the column totals more than 37.

Repair it or let it go?
Compare the shop's quote with what a running Cooper like yours brings. Once the Cooper's repair bill comes close to that number, selling it broken is usually the better call. Start here:
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2002-2005, ask a MINI dealer whether the 15V660 steering work was ever done.
- Overheating Cooper S? The two water pump campaigns above are worth checking first. Our head gasket guide covers what happens when heat has already done damage.
- Own a 2007-2013? Recall 23V337, filed under the electrical system, has dealers inspect the sunroof drains, the interior footwell area and the FRM. See electrical problems for how to weigh a wiring fault.
- Cooper SE battery warning? Park it outside as the recall says and call a dealer. The EV battery guide covers the sell-or-repair choice.
If the numbers still don't work, when repairs cost more than the car walks through it.
Selling the Cooper in one piece
- Have the Cooper's VIN, mileage and problem ready. Tell us if it steers, rolls and starts.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where your Cooper sits: a cramped city space, driveway, garage or shop lot. A Cooper is small, but the driver still needs to know if the wheels turn. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete. Don't pull the turbo, the converter or the wheels first. Mention anything already gone.
- Give our driver the Cooper's title along with a photo ID. What happens to the plates on a sold Mini Cooper depends on your state. See after you sell for that. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which MINI Cooper model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- No Cooper year draws more grief than the 2005, at 843 complaints on file as of October 10, 2026. Behind it sit the 2003 (537), 2004 (529), 2006 (449) and 2007 (398). The newest Cooper model years are still young, so a small complaint count doesn't say much about them yet.
- Was there a recall for the power steering on early Coopers?
- Yes. Recall 15V660 covers 2002-2005 Cooper and Cooper S hatchbacks and 2005 convertibles that may lose power steering assist. Dealers inspect the electro-hydraulic power steering system and replace parts and wiring as needed. Check whether your Cooper still has it open by typing the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- My Cooper SE shows a high-voltage battery warning. What should I do?
- Recall 24V612 covers 2020-2024 Hardtop 2 Door Cooper SE cars. Cooper owners who see the warning should park outdoors, clear of buildings, until it's fixed. Call a MINI dealer about the recall before you decide anything else.
- Will you take a Cooper that doesn't run or steer?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention if your Cooper rolls and its wheels turn, so we send a fitting truck.
