Selling a dead or junk MINI

We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a MINI is no exception. A Cooper with a dead engine, a Countryman that sat through two winters, a Clubman with a warning light nobody could clear: sell the whole car as it sits. Our truck meets it at the curb, the driveway or the shop. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Below is what the public records say about MINI: which models it has sold here, and where owners have filed complaints with federal safety regulators.

Four names, one of them doing most of the work

The EPA's fuel economy list carries MINI from the 2002 model year through 2027, under four model names. The Cooper is there from the first year to the last. The other three came later and two have already left the list.

  • 2002: the Cooper is the only MINI in the list.
  • 2008: the Clubman joins it.
  • 2011: the Countryman arrives.
  • 2014-2016: the Paceman appears for three model years and then drops out.
  • 2024: the last Clubman year in the list.

So for most of its US history, "a MINI" has meant a Cooper. That matters when you read the complaint numbers below.

Where the NHTSA complaints land

As of October 10, 2026, MINI owners had sent NHTSA 4,983 complaints across these four names.

ModelComplaints filed with NHTSA
Cooper4,771
Countryman106
Clubman80
Paceman4

The Cooper holds almost all of them. Read that as exposure first: it has the most model years by far and, for years, was the only MINI on sale. The Paceman's four complaints come from a car the EPA lists for just three years.

Every Mini report here came from an owner who chose to file it. None of them is a confirmed fault, and the table is no reliability score. The 2025 Cooper is still new, so its tally is just beginning. Wait a few years before you hold recent Coopers and Countrymen up against a 2007. For the breakdown by model year and component, open the model page.

Selling a MINI that has stopped

Small cars like these often reach the point where the repair quote is larger than the car's value. Deciding whether a Mini is worth fixing? For a Mini that costs more to fix than it's worth, see when repairs cost more than the car. If the engine itself is gone, the blown engine guide covers it.

You don't strip it first. Leave the battery, the wheels and everything else on the car.

  1. Note the model (Cooper, Clubman, Countryman or Paceman), the year and the mileage.
  2. Mention if it starts, if it rolls, and anything broken or pulled off.
  3. Check you have the title. If not, start with selling a junk car with no title.
  4. Give the address where it sits, even if that is a repair shop's back lot.

When it is gone, handle the plates and the paperwork.

All years shown are model years as the EPA records them. A 2027 end date means MINI is still selling that name.

Questions people ask

Will you take a MINI that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so a MINI with a seized engine, a slipping gearbox or flat tires from years in the carport still qualifies. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Why does the Cooper have so many more complaints than other MINIs?
Mostly time and numbers. The Cooper is in the EPA list for every year from 2002 on, while the Paceman covers three years and the Countryman starts in 2011. More Coopers, over more years, gave owners more chances to write in. The count tallies those reports; it does not rate how dependable any MINI is.
Do I need to remove anything from my MINI before pickup?
Nothing mechanical. Leave every part on it. Take out your personal things and any toll tag, and keep the plates if your state wants them back.
My MINI is a newer model year with few complaints. Does that mean it is trouble-free?
Not necessarily. A recent MINI has had only a short stretch in owners' hands, so its small count says little either way.
