Selling a junk MINI Clubman

Half of the Clubman's NHTSA complaints come from two model years. The 2016 and 2017 hold 41 of its 80. Air bag recall 16V553 covers both of those years, and 16V914 is listed for the 2017. Every other year has 13 or fewer.

Two generations

Wikipedia lists the first Clubman as built from 2007 to June 2014 at Plant Oxford in Cowley, England. It used 1.4- and 1.6-liter fours, with a 1.6-liter turbo in the Cooper S. The second generation ran from 2015 to 2024 on BMW's UKL2 platform, with a 1.5-liter turbo three in the Cooper and a 2.0-liter turbo four in the Cooper S and JCW, and offered four-wheel drive. The last Clubman left Plant Oxford on February 5, 2024. The Aceman replaced it.

2008-2015 model years: wiring

These years hold 29 complaints, none before 2012. The electrical system leads on both the 2012 (6 of 10) and the 2013 (5 of 13). NHTSA lists no recall campaign for these years in this file.

2016-2024 model years: air bags and brakes

These years hold 51 complaints. On the 2016, engine leads with 4; on the 2017, exterior lighting and power train tie at 5. Service brakes show up across the run, 10 complaints in all. The 2019 has 6 complaints, and 4 of them report an injury.

Recall 16V553 covers 7,810 2016-2017 Clubmans built from August 19, 2015 to July 14, 2016. The recall concerns the side curtain air bags, and dealers modify the driver and passenger curtain air bag covers. Recall 16V914 replaces air bag modules on 2017 vehicles; its 3,506 count spans many BMW and Rolls-Royce models. NHTSA also lists 18V465 for the 2019, a crankshaft sensor campaign whose summary names the BMW 540d.

Should you fix it?

Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first, especially on a 2016-2017. Next, ask for the Clubman repair quote in writing and set it against a running Clubman from that same year. If the bags have already gone off after a crash, see airbags deployed. For a tired first-generation car, old or high mileage helps you weigh it.
