Selling an Oldsmobile Alero that's done
Alero owners had sent NHTSA 1,957 complaints by October 10, 2026, the biggest pile for any Oldsmobile on this site. It is also the car that closed the brand. The last Alero Final 500 Edition, a GLS sedan numbered 500 of 500, was the final Oldsmobile ever built. It left the Lansing plant on April 29, 2004, with the plant workers' signatures under the hood.

What Alero owners reported
Every Alero is one generation. Wikipedia lists production from April 1998 to April 29, 2004, on GM's N-body platform, with the Pontiac Grand Am and Chevrolet Malibu as related cars. It names a 2.2-liter Ecotec four and a five-speed Getrag manual. The complaint file splits most clearly by model year, so that's how it's grouped here.
1999-2000: brakes, then lights
The first two model years hold 1,019 of the 1,957 complaints. On the 1999, the hydraulic service brakes come first, with 93. On the 2000, they come second with 111, behind exterior lighting at 117.
Two recalls sit on these early cars. Recall 98V320000 covers some 1999 Aleros whose steering wheel retaining nut may not have been tightened properly, so the wheel could come loose from the shaft. Dealers check the nut and tighten it. Recall 00V140000 covers 1999-2000 cars whose center console cover may not stay closed as the interior-impact standard requires; dealers replace the latch. That campaign counted 487,400 vehicles, and the count may include other GM models.
2001-2004: the electrical years
From the 2001 on, the electrical system is the top component in every model year: 98 complaints on the 2001, 108 on the 2002, 84 on the 2003 and 47 on the 2004. Its 479 mentions across all years top every other category in the Alero file.
Exterior lighting stays high on the 2001 (49) and the 2002 (60). Recall 03V327000 replaced the hazard warning switch on 2000-2001 Aleros, where solder joints could crack. That campaign covered 670,740 vehicles, and its notice gives a Chevrolet phone number, so other models are in the count.
Three more recalls touch these years:
- 00V372000, 2000-2001 cars with the manual transaxle: the fifth-to-reverse shift fell short of federal rule FMVSS 114 on theft protection. Dealers disable the fifth-to-reverse inhibitor and replace the shifter.
- 04V528000, 2003: in hot weather, the accelerator pedal arm may stick at its attachment. Dealers inspect it and replace the pedal assembly if needed.
- 03V250000, 2001: an owner's manual supplement explaining the child-seat anchor symbols.
Air bags show up among the top components on the 2003 (14 complaints) and 2004 (11). The younger cars also had fewer years of driving in which owners could write in, one reason the totals shrink after 2001.
One recall covers every Alero
Recall 14V400000 lists every model year from 1999 to 2004. GM's notice ties the ignition issue to how the airbags behave. Its interim advice: strip the ring down to the bare ignition key. The dealer fix is a pair of new rings plus either a slot insert or a cap for the key head. The campaign covered 5,877,718 vehicles across many GM models.
One more crash fact from Wikipedia: the IIHS gave the 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am, built on the same platform as the Alero, a Poor rating in its frontal crash test.
Alero complaints and recalls by model year
Every Alero number here comes from the NHTSA owner-complaint download of October 10, 2026. An Alero recall that covers three model years is listed once in each of those three rows. Production started in April 1998, which is why two complaints are filed under 1998.
| Model year | Complaints | Crash reports | Fire reports | Injuries reported | Recall campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1998 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Tires; engine (1 each) |
| 1999 | 462 | 14 | 11 | 14 | 3 | Service brakes (93) |
| 2000 | 557 | 20 | 8 | 20 | 4 | Exterior lighting (117) |
| 2001 | 364 | 20 | 5 | 18 | 4 | Electrical system (98) |
| 2002 | 279 | 11 | 8 | 9 | 1 | Electrical system (108) |
| 2003 | 184 | 18 | 1 | 15 | 2 | Electrical system (84) |
| 2004 | 109 | 7 | 2 | 7 | 1 | Electrical system (47) |
| All years | 1,957 | 90 | 35 | 83 | 7 campaigns | Electrical system (479) |
Repair the Alero, or sell it?
Pin down the fault first. Only then hold the repair estimate up against a running Alero's local price.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Ask a GM dealer whether the 14V400000 key work was ever done.
- Electrical gremlins are the most common thread in the Alero file. A dead dash, flickering lights or a no-start can be a small fix or a long hunt. Our electrical problems guide covers how to judge it.
- Brakes lead on the 1999 and run close on the 2000. If the quote for brakes plus anything else nears what a running Alero of the same year brings locally, selling makes more sense. See bad brakes and when repairs cost more than it's worth.
Selling the Alero in one piece
- Jot down the Alero's VIN, odometer reading and symptoms. Note the gearbox, five-speed or automatic, and whether the wheels turn freely.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's parked: driveway, street, garage, back lot or a shop. The truck needs to know if the wheels turn. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it whole. Don't pull the converter, the battery or the wheels. If anything is already gone, say so.
- At Alero pickup, give the driver the signed title and show your driver's license or another photo ID. Title missing? Read selling with no title. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Alero model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2000, with 557 complaints in NHTSA's owner file as of October 10, 2026. Second place goes to the 1999 at 462, then the 2001 at 364. A 2004 also spent fewer years in service before this count, so its 109 isn't a clean comparison.
- Was the Alero really the last Oldsmobile?
- Yes. Wikipedia says the last car of the Alero Final 500 Edition, a GLS 4-door numbered 500 of 500, was also the final Oldsmobile ever built. It left the Lansing plant on April 29, 2004, signed under the hood by the plant's employees.
- Does the Alero have an ignition key recall?
- Recall 14V400000 covers 1999-2004 Aleros. GM links the Alero ignition fault to airbag behavior. Keep the Alero's ignition key alone on its own ring. Keep doing that until a dealer adds the Alero key-slot insert or key-head cover plus two smaller rings. Type your Alero's VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls to find out if this recall covers your car.
- Will you take an Alero that won't start or has bad brakes?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Describe the symptoms, say if it rolls, and give us the address where it sits.
