Selling a junk Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
Air bags drew 33 of the 77 complaints owners filed with NHTSA on the 1995 Cutlass Supreme, its busiest year. Those years also have an air bag recall. Campaign 00V171 says corrosion of the inflator's internal wiring on 1995-1996 cars could make the driver's air bag deploy when it shouldn't, and dealers were to replace the inflators.

Wikipedia describes the Cutlass Supreme as a mid-size car built from 1966 to 1997 and placed at the top of the Cutlass range, with the Intrigue as its successor. The car in the photo is a 1976 Brougham coupe; the complaint and recall data below covers the 1984-1997 model years in EPA records. Whichever one is in your driveway, you can sell the whole car as it sits.
Two very different cars under one name
1984-1987: the last rear-drive Supremes
Wikipedia's fourth generation runs 1978 to 1988 and was built in Arlington, Texas, through 1987, on the rear-drive G-body from 1982. EPA data also lists a "Cutlass Supreme Classic" name in these years.
NHTSA has almost nothing on file for them: no complaints for 1984, 1985 or 1986, and 3 for 1987. One of those 1987 complaints records a death. None of these years has a recall campaign listed.
1988-1997: the front-drive W-body
The fifth generation, from 1988 to 1997, is a different car: transverse engine, front-wheel drive, the W-body shared with the Buick Regal, designed under Ed Welburn and built in Doraville, Georgia, from 1988 to 1995. Both generations overlap in 1988, so the 1988 complaint count can't be split by body. These years hold 293 of the 296 complaints.
1988-1990: structure. Structure is the top complaint on each of these years: 8 on the 1988, 7 on the 1989 and 12 on the 1990. Recall 00V189 covers the same three years in salt-using states, including Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire. Dealers replaced the front and rear frame or cradle bolts and retainers. The whole campaign counted 713,435 vehicles, a figure that may include other GM models.
1994: brakes. The 1994 has 43 complaints and no recall listed. Brakes lead with 15, then vehicle speed control with 5.
1995-1996: air bags. Besides the 33 on the 1995, air bags top the 1996 complaints too, with 10 of 47. Both Cutlass Supreme years fall under recall 00V171, and NHTSA lists 268,146 vehicles for that campaign, possibly including other models.
1996-1997: steering. Steering is named 13 times on the 1997, more than anything else that year. Recall 03V527 covers 1996-1997 cars whose power rack and pinion has a lower pinion bearing with retainer tabs that weren't crimped properly, so the ball bearings could escape. Dealers installed a new bearing or, if needed, a new gear assembly. The campaign counted 750,283 vehicles and may include other models.
Owner complaints by model year
Tallied October 10, 2026 from the complaints Supreme owners sent NHTSA. Each complaint is a single owner's account, not a judgment of the Cutlass Supreme, and a 1997 has been around ten years less than a 1987.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Deaths | Recalls | Leading components |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1986 | none on file | - | - | - | 0 | - |

| 1988 | 22 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Structure 8, brakes 5, steering 3 |
| 1989 | 23 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | Structure 7, brakes 4, steering 4 |
| 1990 | 38 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Structure 12, electrical 8, brakes 5 |
| 1991-1993 | none on file | - | - | - | 0 | - |
| 1994 | 43 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 0 | Brakes 15, speed control 5, air bags 4 |
| 1995 | 77 | 7 | 12 | 2 | 1 | Air bags 33, brakes 16, power train 8 |
| 1996 | 47 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Air bags 10, brakes 9, electrical 8 |
| 1997 | 43 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 1 | Steering 13, brakes 7, engine 4 |
Overall the hydraulic service brakes are named most (61), then air bags (47), structure (27), steering (25), engine and engine cooling (24) and the electrical system (20). The complaints record 21 crashes, 5 fires, 20 people injured and 4 deaths.

Repair it or sell it?
On a 1988-1990 car from a salt state, look underneath before anything else and check whether the 00V189 frame and cradle bolt work was done; our rotted frame guide covers what to look for. For a soft or grinding pedal, see bad brakes. Next, get the Cutlass Supreme repair priced in writing and set that next to what a running one brings. When the repair price comes near the Cutlass Supreme's value, selling it broken is easier.
