Selling a dead or junk Oldsmobile Toronado
One model year carries almost half of the Toronado's record. NHTSA's owner-complaint file listed 35 entries for this front-wheel-drive personal luxury car as of our October 10, 2026 pull. The 1990 alone has 16. Brakes and electrical trouble account for 10 of those 16.

1990: brakes, wiring and two recalls
The 1990 is the year to look at first. Its 16 complaints include 5 on hydraulic brakes, 5 on the electrical system and 2 on seat belts. Two recalls cover it. Under campaign 90V164000, the cable linking the floor shifter to the transaxle can pop off, leaving the selector and gear indicator useless. Campaign 95V110000 covers 1990-1992 cars, where the front shoulder belt can stick in its retractor and be hard to pull out; the listed fix was a webbing stop button, installed if the owner asked. That 113,343 total is for the entire campaign; other GM cars may be in it.
What the generations changed
EPA data lists the Toronado for model years 1984 to 1993, two generations by Wikipedia's account, though Wikipedia says Oldsmobile discontinued it at the end of the 1992 model year. The complaint and recall records here run through 1992.
1984-1985 (third generation). Built in Linden, New Jersey. Its engine sat lengthwise yet powered the front wheels, and the wheelbase was 114 inches. From 1982 to 1985 it used the four-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 325-4L overdrive automatic. Owners filed just 3 complaints for these two years. Recall 89V102000 covers a slipping nylon bushing in the cruise servo that can surge the engine or let it diesel on with the ignition off. Its 1,755,897 vehicles are the full campaign's tally, which may reach past the Toronado.
1986-1992 (fourth generation). Smaller, at 108 inches between the wheels, and built at Detroit/Hamtramck with a 3.8-liter Buick V6 and a 4-speed 4T60 automatic. The recalls before 1990 touch steering and brakes:
- 1986-1987: the power steering pressure hose could rub against a transmission connector (88V078000).
- 1986: the console door might not stay shut in a crash (87V006000, 265 vehicles).
- 1989: the left front brake pipe could touch the cruise control bracket (89V056000), and ABS hydraulic unit bolts might not be seated (89V055000).
- 1992: a steering coupling pinch bolt may be missing (91V157000).
The last Toronado left the line on May 28, 1992.
Complaints and recalls by year
Complaint tallies come from NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. Multi-year recalls appear under every year they cover.

Worth fixing?
Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first, especially on a 1989 or 1992, where the recall campaigns touch brakes and steering. On a 1990 with dead gauges or lights, read our electrical problems guide before paying for a diagnosis. Then set the written quote beside what a running Toronado of the same year brings. A car parked a long time often needs more than the first repair; our guide for long-parked cars covers that.
Selling your Toronado whole
Write down your Toronado's VIN, mileage and each problem you've seen, then get an offer online or at (877) 421-6008. Say whether the car rolls, whether the steering turns and where the truck will find it: a garage, a carport, a storage lot. Sell the whole car as it sits, with the wheel covers and trim still on. Expect to hand over the title and show ID at collection; check after you sell for your state's plate rules.
Questions people ask
- Why does the 1990 Toronado have so many complaints?
- It accounts for 16 of the Toronado's 35 owner complaints in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file, with hydraulic brakes and the electrical system at 5 each. No other year has more than 4. A count this small can't tell you how any one car will hold up.
- Is a Trofeo covered on this page?
- Yes. EPA lists the car as both Toronado and Trofeo/Toronado, and the complaint and recall counts here are for the Toronado name. Wikipedia notes Oldsmobile ended the Toronado and Trofeo together after the 1992 model year.
- Do you buy a Toronado that won't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Let us know if the wheels turn, if the steering moves, and where the car is kept.
