Your Oldsmobile Intrigue is done. Now what?
The Intrigue's first model year carries almost half its file. Owners filed 1,139 complaints with NHTSA on the Intrigue, counted as of October 10, 2026, and 510 of them are on the 1998. The single biggest topic on that year is steering, with 144.

An Intrigue with a clunking rack, a coolant leak or a dead engine doesn't need fixing before it goes. You can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
One generation, all built in Kansas
Wikipedia gives the Intrigue a single run, from May 5, 1997 to June 14, 2002. Every one was built at GM's Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, the same plant that built the Pontiac Grand Prix. It rode on the second-generation W-body, shared with the Buick Century and Regal and the Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo. Its powertrain, per Wikipedia: a 3.8-liter L36 V6 driving through a 4T65-E four-speed automatic. It replaced the Cutlass Supreme.

1998-1999: steering and the 3.8 V6
These two years hold 766 of the 1,139 complaints. Steering leads the 1998 with 144 and stays near the top of the 1999 with 46.
Recall 03V527000 covers the 1998. On certain Intrigue power rack and pinion units, the lower pinion bearing's retainer tabs were poorly crimped, so the ball bearings could work loose. Dealers install a new lower pinion bearing, or replace the gear assembly if inspection shows it's needed. The campaign counted 750,283 vehicles, and that number includes other GM cars.
The engine is the other thread. Engine and engine cooling has 62 complaints on the 1998 and 44 on the 1999. These are also the years in two GM engine campaigns:
- 09V116000 lists 1998-1999 Intrigues among 1,497,516 GM cars with the 3.8L V6, including the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo and Impala, and Pontiac Grand Prix. The dealer fix swaps the 3.8's front valve cover and its gasket for redesigned ones.
- 15V701000 came back to the same years. By GM's own account, the fixes from three earlier campaigns (08V-118, 09V-116 and 15V-201) left the risk in place, so a better repair replaced them. Its 1,003,556-vehicle total also takes in the Lumina, Regal, Grand Prix, Impala and Monte Carlo.
Of the 57 Intrigue complaints that report a fire, 53 are on the 1998 (39) and the 1999 (14). A smaller recall, 98V241000, covers some 1999 cars with the 3.8L V6 built without a heater hose clip. The hose could sag onto the oxygen sensor and leak coolant.
Seat belts round out these years. Recall 00V044000 covers 1998-1999 cars whose rear shoulder belts could twist and jam in the retractor; dealers remove the twists and add clips.
2000-2002: wiring and lights
Complaints drop to 200 on the 2000, 108 on the 2001 and 64 on the 2002. Production ended in June 2002, and a younger Intrigue simply had fewer seasons in owners' hands to draw NHTSA filings before this count. The topics shift to the electrical system (60 on the 2000, 30 on the 2002) and exterior lighting (35 on the 2000, 31 on the 2001).
Recalls on these years:
- 00V114000, 2000: some cars have internal fluid leaks in the brake hydraulic control unit. Dealers inspect the ABS modulator and replace it if needed.
- 00V228003, 2000-2001: TRW seat belt buckle bases that were not properly heat treated. This campaign also covered trucks, SUVs and minivans.
- 01V109000, 2000-2001: air bag labels on the sun visors that did not meet the federal standard. GM mailed new labels.
Recall 14V400000 spans every year from 1998 to 2002. GM's notice links the ignition issue to the airbag system and tells drivers to run with a bare ignition key until a dealer fits new rings and a key insert.
Intrigue complaints and recalls, year by year
Intrigue figures come from NHTSA's owner-complaint download as it stood on October 10, 2026. Multi-year recall campaigns appear in every year they name.
| Model year | Owner complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injured | Campaigns listing the year | Top component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1997 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Electrical system (1) |
| 1998 | 510 | 19 | 39 | 12 | 6 | Steering (144) |
| 1999 | 256 | 11 | 14 | 15 | 6 | Electrical system (48) |
| 2000 | 200 | 11 | 2 | 6 | 4 | Electrical system (60) |
| 2001 | 108 | 6 | 1 | 3 | 3 | Exterior lighting (31) |
| 2002 | 64 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 1 | Electrical system (30) |
| Total | 1,139 | 51 | 57 | 37 | 11 campaigns | Steering (225) |
Three complaints, all on the 1999, report a death.
Should you fix it?
- Recalls come first. Enter the 17-character VIN at NHTSA's lookup and ask a GM dealer what's still open. On a 1998, the steering bearing recall is the one to ask about. Our open recall guide covers selling with recall work undone.
- Engine leaking or overheating on a 1998-1999? Ask whether the valve cover campaigns were done before you pay for anything else.
- Ask the shop to put the estimate on paper, then look up asking prices for running Intrigues with similar miles in your area. If fixing the Intrigue would use up most of that price, selling it broken makes more sense. See when repairs cost more than it's worth.
How the sale works
- Pull together the VIN, the odometer number and the symptoms. Mention if it cranks, if the wheel turns, and if it can be pushed.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Give the location, at home, curbside or at a mechanic's, so a truck that fits the spot is sent. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave every part on it. If a battery, wheel or converter is already gone, flag it before pickup.
- Our driver takes the Intrigue's title and keys and looks at your photo ID. Lost title? Read selling with no title. Plates and insurance: after you sell.
Other Oldsmobiles: the Cutlass Supreme, Aurora, Alero and Eighty-Eight, or all Oldsmobile models.
Questions people ask
- Why does the 1998 Intrigue have so many complaints?
- It has 510 of the 1,139 complaints owners filed with NHTSA on the Intrigue, counted as of October 10, 2026, and 144 of those name the steering. Recall 03V527000 covers 1998 Intrigues whose power rack and pinion lower bearing retainers were not crimped properly. The data shows where owners complained; it does not rate the car.
- Which Intrigue years are in the 3.8 V6 engine recalls?
- The 1998 and 1999. Recall 09V116000 replaces the front valve cover and gasket with an improved design, and recall 15V701000 set an improved remedy after GM said earlier fixes did not adequately remove the safety risk. Both campaigns also cover other GM cars with the 3.8L V6.
- Can you pick up an Intrigue that leaks coolant and won't drive?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us it doesn't drive and where it sits.
