Selling a worn-out Oldsmobile Silhouette
Three model years, 1998 through 2000, hold 102 of the 144 Silhouette complaints that name the engine and engine cooling. No other pattern stands out as clearly among the 950 Silhouette complaints NHTSA had on file by October 10, 2026.

A Silhouette that overheats, won't shift or won't start can still be sold. You sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Before you spend money on it
- Check recalls by VIN at NHTSA's lookup. Second-generation vans have three sliding-door campaigns to ask a GM dealer about.
- Running hot or losing coolant on a 1998-2000? That's where the engine complaints bunch up. Our head gasket and overheating guide explains what you're likely facing.
- Ask the shop to write the quote down, then hold it up against what sellers near you want for a working Silhouette. When the estimate swallows most of that figure, an unrepaired sale is the easier road. See car doesn't run.
Where the complaints cluster
Wikipedia splits the Silhouette into two generations. The second has far more complaints: 719 of the 950, against 231 for the first.
First generation, 1990-1996: seat belts and a closed plant
The first Silhouette was built in North Tarrytown, New York, on GM's U-body, with a 3.1-liter V6 and a 3-speed 3T40 automatic. Production ended on June 26, 1996, when that plant, in operation since 1900, was shut.
Belt complaints lead the 1990 (16), the 1992 (7) and the 1993 (4), and share first place on the 1991 (9). Four seat belt recalls hit these years:
- 94V027000, 1992-1993: a rear belt on the six- and seven-passenger vans may lock up and refuse to pull out.
- 93V212000, 1994: rear center retractors missing a pawl spring.
- 94V015000, 1994: third-row retractors that may have been installed incorrectly.
- 94V100000, 1993-1994: a second-row shoulder belt that could get pinched by the pillar trim.
Other first-generation recalls: 95V048000, a brake pedal arm on some 1995 vans that could fracture while braking; 96V015000, 1992-1995 transmission cooler lines that could separate in low temperatures under high transmission load (the campaign's 585,182 vehicles include passenger cars); and 97V058000, rear cradle bolts on 1990-1991 vans from the states the notice names, among them Michigan, Ohio and New York (676,535 vehicles across passenger cars and minivans).
Second generation, 1997-2004: engine, doors and latches
For 1997, production moved to Doraville, Georgia. Wikipedia gives this van a 3.4-liter V6, the 4T65-E four-speed, and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. The Premiere trim added a DVD system with a fold-down screen, and Wikipedia calls the Silhouette one of the first minivans to offer a factory video system.
With 170, the 1998 tops every other Silhouette year, led by exterior lighting (31) and the engine (30). The engine leads the 1999 with 45 and the 2000 with 27.
The power sliding door is this generation's recall thread:
- 01V067000 and its follow-up 01V264000, 1997-2001: the passenger-side power door could close without latching and open while driving. Dealers install a new unlatch actuator.
- 04V597000, 1997-2004: in Silhouettes with second-row bucket seats or captain's chairs, the power door's inside handle on the passenger side could hurt whoever pulled it. Dealers replace the handle.
Latches, locks and linkages are named in 44 complaints overall. A few more campaigns on these vans:
- 98V131000, 1998: if the shift cable fitting broke or the linkage worked loose, putting the lever in Park might not actually park the transmission.
- 98V072000, 1997-1998: in Silhouettes with traction control, a brake line could get rubbed by the wiper linkage arm.
- 02V286000, 1996-1998: the lower pinion bearing in the power steering rack, in a campaign of 1,159,156 cars and minivans.
- 02V222000, 2002-2003: the driver's air bag inflator might crack along a weld when the bag fires.
The 2003 has 36 complaints, and 6 of them report a death. The final Silhouette years have also had fewer years of driving, so their totals stay lower. Production ended on March 31, 2004, when GM shut down Oldsmobile. The Saturn Relay took its place.

Getting the van picked up
- Note the VIN, the odometer and what quit working. Tell us the drive layout, FWD or AWD, and whether the van moves when shifted to Neutral.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. A van boxed into a garage or down on flat tires calls for different gear than one parked streetside. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it complete, seats and DVD screen included. If something has been pulled, mention it.
- Sign the title over at pickup and show the driver a photo ID. Missing title: selling with no title. Plates and insurance: after you sell.
Other Oldsmobiles: the Bravada, Intrigue, Eighty-Eight and Cutlass Ciera, or every Oldsmobile model.
Questions people ask
- Which Silhouette years have the most engine complaints?
- The 1998, 1999 and 2000. Of 950 Silhouette complaints in NHTSA's file on October 10, 2026, 144 name the engine and engine cooling, and these years account for 102 of those. Complaints show what owners reported, not how often a part gave out.
- Is there a recall on the Silhouette's power sliding door?
- Yes, three. Recalls 01V067000 and 01V264000 cover 1997-2001 vans whose passenger-side power sliding door could close without latching. Under recall 04V597000, 1997-2004 Silhouettes with second-row bucket seats get a new inside handle on the passenger side. Enter your VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you take a Silhouette with a blown engine?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, minivans included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us it doesn't run and where it's parked.
