Three Bravadas, three different complaint files
Wikipedia splits the Bravada into three generations, all assembled in Moraine, Ohio. The complaint topics change with each one.
First generation, 1991-1994: the brake years
The early Bravada was all-wheel drive, with the 4.3-liter Vortec 4300 V6 on GM's GMT330 platform, related to the Chevrolet S-Blazer and GMC Jimmy. Owners filed 234 complaints on the 1991 through 1994, and 159 of them name the hydraulic service brakes. On the 1994 alone, 63 of 91 complaints are about brakes. Brakes are also the most-named component across every Bravada, with 201.
Two recalls on this generation are listed in full. Recall 91V108000 covers 1991 trucks shipped with the fuel tank sender seal out of position; the seals were replaced. Recall 96V142000 covers 1991 trucks whose rear seat belt buckle release could stick in the unlatched position; dealers replace the three rear buckles.
NHTSA's file also holds 2 complaints under a 1995 model year. Wikipedia's generations jump from 1994 to 1996.
Second generation, 1996-2001: wipers, steering and drivetrain
Wikipedia pairs this Bravada with the Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy. Its six model years drew 448 complaints.
Visibility shows up early: 13 complaints on the 1996, 13 on the 1997 and 29 on the 1998, where it's the top component. Recall 03V159000 covers 1996 models whose windshield wiper motor could quit because of cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. That campaign counted 1,755,876 vehicles across GM minivans, pickups and SUVs.
Other recalls on these years:
- 96V234000, 1996: in testing, the prop shaft contacted the fuel tank and fuel leaked. Dealers add shielding to the tank.
- 01V200000, 1996-1997: upper ball joints on trucks from the states the recall names, among them Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Massachusetts. Dealers replace both.
- 03V117000, 1997: a driver's seat belt buckle with an energy-absorbing loop that could fully deploy under heavy crash loads.
- 01V364000, 2000-2001: the multifunction switch could lose its circuit, leaving the stop lamps and rear hazards dark. Dealers replace the hazard switch carrier.
Owners pointed at the power train most often on the 1997 (15), the 1999 (11) and the 2001 (7). Suspension shows up on the 2000 with 10.
Third generation, 2002-2004: the recall-heavy year
A new design by Bill Davis on the GMT360 platform, with the 4.2-liter Atlas inline-six and rear- or all-wheel drive. Production ran from February 2001 to January 12, 2004. The 2002 has 238 complaints; the most-named topics are power train (44), engine and engine cooling (38) and the electrical system (35). The 2003 has 27 and the 2004 has 13. The last Bravadas off the line are the newest, which gives their owners fewer years of reports so far.
Recalls that touch this generation include:
- 02V121000, 2002: a fuel filter fitting can disconnect. If it lets go while starting, the truck won't start and fuel is pumped out of the filter.
- 03V075000, 2002-2003: a mechanical override could let the ignition key come out when it shouldn't, short of the theft-protection standard. Dealers disable it.
- 04V046000, 2002-2003: moisture could get into the wiper module, leaving wipers dead, stuck mid-sweep or switching on unasked.
- 03V151000, 2003: a left-front brake pipe scored during manufacturing. Dealers replace it.
- 04V527000 (2002-2004) for rear bulbs that vibrate loose in their sockets, and 05V198000 (2003-2004) for turn-signal flasher modules that could blink the lamps the wrong way.
Fix it, or let it go?
- Run the truck's VIN through NHTSA's recall search. A 2002 has the longest list to work through.
- Brakes on a first-generation truck are the pattern in the data. Have the brake job priced on paper, then check local listings for a running Bravada of the same year. Our bad brakes guide covers the signs.
- Drivetrain or engine trouble on a 2002? If the quote runs close to what the truck is worth running, selling it as is makes more sense. See junk truck or SUV.
Bravada complaints and recalls by model year
Bravada counts come from NHTSA's owner-complaint data, downloaded October 10, 2026. Because one campaign can name several model years, the recall column totals well past 24.
