Selling a junk or broken-down Plymouth Breeze

Owners have filed 68 fire complaints about the Plymouth Breeze with NHTSA. That's more than the 62 crash complaints in the same file. Most come late in the run: 25 of the 1999's 117 complaints, and 22 of the 2000's 38.

Whether your Breeze burned, blew its engine or just stopped, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

One generation, two different stretches

The Breeze was a mid-size sedan built at Sterling Heights Assembly in Michigan on Chrysler's JA platform. It replaced the Acclaim. Wikipedia's engine list for these cars includes a 2.0-liter four marked "Breeze & Stratus only," a 2.4-liter four and a 2.5-liter V6. The Plymouth Breeze came with two transmission choices: a 4-speed automatic, or a manual with 5 speeds. Plymouth dropped the Breeze early in the 2000 model year, and the 2001 Dodge Stratus took its place.

Complaint figures run to October 10, 2026. Each recall's vehicle number covers its full campaign, possibly with other models among them.

1996-1998: engine complaints and shifter recalls

Engine and engine cooling leads each of these years: 84 of the 1996's 182 complaints, 69 of the 1997's 155, and 66 of the 1998's 174. Across the whole Breeze file it's named 249 times, far ahead of steering at 71.

The recalls in these years center on brakes, the shifter, and the front end:

  • 96V074000 (1996): the Breeze's ABS hydraulic control unit could corrode and leave solenoid valves stuck open. 90,000 vehicles.
  • 96V075000 (1996): the brake master cylinder could leak past a damaged rear piston seal. 151,800 vehicles; the same campaign covers the 1995-1996 Neon.
  • 97V095000 (1996-1997): the secondary hood latch spring could pop out if the hood was slammed. 219,000 vehicles.
  • 97V201000 (1995-1997): once it lost its grease, the lower control arm ball joint could come apart. 599,000 vehicles; the 1995 start year shows it reaches beyond the Breeze.
  • 98V183000 (1996-1998): a badly adjusted shifter-to-ignition cable could trap the key. 685,000 vehicles.
  • 04V021000 (1996-1999): the floor shifter's park interlock could fail and let the shifter leave Park with the key out. 2,315,768 vehicles.

1999-2000: fires and steering hoses

Total complaints drop, but fire complaints rise. On the 1999, the engine (23), electrical system (19) and steering (14) lead. On the 2000, steering leads with 15, followed by 12 complaints coded to hoses, piping and connections.

1999-2000 Breezes fitted with the 2.4-liter engine fall under recall 06V001000. The high-pressure power steering hose could age from heat and leak; dealers replaced it. That campaign counted 216,299 vehicles. The complaint counts alone don't show what caused each fire, so treat that recall as a lead to check, not an answer.

Two more recalls touch brake lines. Under 99V244000 (1998-1999, 366,508 vehicles), the right rear brake tube could rub on an exhaust clamp and wear through. Under 00V196000 (2000, 3,400 vehicles), a weld at the right front brake hose block could be weak. The 2000 Breeze also carries three small campaigns: wrong child lock labels (00V066000), 38 cars with unpainted fuel tank straps (00V067000), and an owner's manual addendum (00V366000) covering 1,211,756 vehicles, pickups and SUVs among them.

Worth one more repair?

The last Breeze was built more than 25 years ago. Get a written quote, then compare it with what a running Breeze sells for nearby.

  1. Type the VIN into NHTSA's search to see the campaigns filed against your car.
  2. Power steering fluid on a 1999-2000 2.4? That's the hose named in 06V001000. A leak near a hot engine is worth stopping for.
  3. Already burned? The fire damage guide covers insurance, title and selling.
  4. Engine gone? Engine and engine cooling is the Breeze's biggest complaint group. See blown engine for how to weigh a replacement.

Breeze complaints and recalls by model year

Later Breezes have spent fewer years in owners' hands to draw reports. One Breeze recall can cover several years, which is why that column adds up past 12.

Selling your Breeze whole

  1. Jot down the VIN and odometer reading, and describe the damage. Mention fire or smoke plainly.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the car is parked and whether it rolls, steers and has all four tires. The truck is sent to match. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave every part on, burned or not. If something has been pulled, tell us.
  5. Have the title and photo ID at pickup. Plates are handled by state rules; after you sell lists them.

Questions people ask

Which Breeze year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1996, its first year, with 182 complaints through October 10, 2026, ahead of the 1998 (174) and 1997 (155). Owners file them; NHTSA doesn't grade reliability with them.
Why are there so many fire complaints on the Breeze?
The file holds 68 fire complaints, and 47 of them are on the 1999 and 2000. These numbers don't explain what caused each fire. Recall 06V001000 is about the high-pressure power steering hose on 2.4-liter 1999-2000 Breezes, which heat could break down until it leaked.
Will you buy a Breeze that has had a fire or won't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including fire-damaged ones, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know which part of the Breeze burned and if it still rolls.
