Selling a junk or non-running Plymouth Voyager
The 1996 Plymouth Voyager has 1,325 complaints on file with NHTSA, more than any other year of the van. It was the first year of the third generation, and its top complaint areas were air bags (193), the engine and engine cooling (178), and the gasoline fuel system (175). Across all its years, owners filed 7,679 complaints about the Voyager. That is more than two-thirds of the 10,961 filed across every Plymouth model.

Three minivans under one name
Plymouth used the Voyager name from 1974 to 2000. It started on a full-size van. From 1984 it went on one of the first minivans to sell well in North America, Wikipedia says. This page covers the minivans. Counts of complaints run through October 10, 2026. A recall's vehicle total is for its entire campaign and can take in other models too.
1984-1990: the first generation (S platform)
These vans were built at Windsor Assembly in Ontario, with front-wheel drive and a 2.2-liter K four among the engines. The seven model years drew 742 complaints. Latches, locks and linkages lead most of them. On the 1989, that's 41 of 180 complaints; on the 1990, 45 of 268. Structure is close behind every year.
Three recalls stand out:
- 85V053000 (1984-1985): road stones could lodge in the height-sensing brake proportioning valve and lengthen stopping distances. 264,000 vehicles in the campaign.
- 89V237000 (1989-1990): the valve cover gasket could slip out of place and leak oil. 634,000 vehicles, a campaign that also lists other Plymouth cars.
- 91V053000 (1989-1990): the inboard front seat belt buckle straps could crack from fatigue near the anchor. 640,000 vehicles.
1991-1995: the second generation (AS platform)
Production moved to the St. Louis North plant in Fenton, Missouri. All-wheel drive was offered, and a 2.5-liter K four is among the listed engines. These five years drew 3,645 complaints, close to half the Voyager total.
Brakes and seat belts dominate. Hydraulic service brakes top the 1991 (176) and 1993 (229) and come second on the 1992 (190). Seat belts lead the 1992 with 216. Recall 96V099000 covers 1991-1993 vans whose ABS hydraulic control unit could wear its piston seals and damage the pump motor; the ABS warranty was also extended. That campaign counted 321,000 vehicles.
The belts drew two campaigns of 1,100,000 vehicles each in 1997. In 97V148000, the buckle cover could slip and leave the buckle only partly latched. In 97V149000, a rear seat belt anchor hook could come loose from the body.
Two recalls, 96V229000 (1991-1992, 675,000 vehicles) and 00V305000 (1993-1994, 679,000), cover Voyager steering wheel armatures that could crack and break off the hub. Liftgate strut bolts could fatigue under 97V079000 (1992) and 99V213000 (1991-1994, 1,318,189 vehicles). Recall 99V113000 covers air bag wiring that could short to ground on 1993-1995 vans.
The 1993 and 1994 carry the most death reports of any Voyager year, 7 and 9. On the 1994, power train (125) and air bags (105) lead.
1996-2000: the third generation (NS platform)
These came from the St. Louis South plant in Fenton, with a 2.4 four or a 3.0, 3.3 or 3.8 V6. The 3.3 could run on gasoline or E85. The five years drew 3,290 complaints.
Fuel is the thread here. The 1996 has 53 fire complaints, the most of any Voyager year. Three fuel recalls cover it:
- 96V002000 (1996): static charge could build on the ungrounded metal fuel filler tube. 265,000 vehicles.
- 99V216000 (1996): fuel could leak where the fuel pump module attaches to the tank. 635,469 vehicles.
- 00V268000 (1996-2000): fuel rail O-rings on the 3.3 and 3.8 could degrade and leak under the hood. 1,163,000 vehicles.
Air bags get two clockspring campaigns. Under 02V293000 (1996-1998, 1,500,521 vehicles), it may have been wound wrong at the factory. Under 04V480000 (1998-2000, 955,344 vehicles), it could fail and disable the driver's air bag. Recall 02V076000 covers 1997-1999 vans where loose trim could jam the rear outboard seat belts.
Engine and engine cooling is in the top three every year from 1996 to 2000 and leads the 1998 with 117. Power train leads the 1997 (93) and 2000 (57). After 2000, Chrysler sold the van as the Chrysler Voyager through 2003, which is why only 2 complaints sit under a 2001 Plymouth.
Voyager complaints and recalls by model year
Tallied October 10, 2026, from NHTSA's owner complaint data. The last Voyagers have had less road time to gather owner reports. Because one campaign can span several years, the last column sums past 40.

Repair the van or let it go?
Even the newest Voyager is 26 model years old. Set the repair quote next to the price your Voyager would bring if it ran.
- Check the VIN up front. Enter it in NHTSA's recall lookup to find every recall listed for your Voyager.
- Smell fuel under the hood of a 3.3 or 3.8? That matches the area of recall 00V268000. Don't drive it until someone has looked.
- Slipping or no gears? Power train tops the Voyager's complaint list. The bad transmission guide covers the signs and when selling makes more sense.
- Voyager sat for years? Stale fuel, flat tires and locked brakes add up. See selling a car that has been sitting.
Selling the van whole
- Write down the van's VIN and mileage, plus what quit and whether it moves.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits. Driveway, side yard, garage or a shop lot all work. Mention if a sliding door or the liftgate won't open, and if any wheels are missing, so the tow driver brings the right setup. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it as it sits. Seats, battery and wheels stay put. Flag anything that's already been taken off.
- When we pick up the Voyager, give us its title and let us see a photo ID. Lost the title? Begin with the no-title guide. Plate rules differ by state; after you sell has them.

Questions people ask
- Which Plymouth Voyager year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1996, with 1,325 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 1992 (945) and 1993 (869) come next. Owners filed these; they don't rate reliability. A newer Voyager just hasn't been driven as many years to pile up reports.
- What is the fuel rail recall on 1996-2000 Voyagers?
- Recall 00V268000 covers minivans with the 3.3 and 3.8 V6. The fuel rail O-ring seals can degrade and leak fuel under the hood. The fix was a seal on the fuel rail crossover tube. The campaign counted 1,163,000 vehicles, a figure that can take in other models. Your VIN can be checked at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you buy a Voyager that won't start or has a bad transmission?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us it doesn't run, whether it will roll in Neutral, and where the van is sitting.
- Do I need to pull the seats or parts out first?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits, seats and all. Mention any part already pulled when you request an offer.
