Selling an old or junk Plymouth Acclaim
No single problem stands out in the Plymouth Acclaim's NHTSA file. Owners filed 426 complaints across all its years, and no year tops the 1991's 97. The four components named most are almost tied: engine and engine cooling (57), air bags (56), suspension (53) and power train (53).

The Acclaim's recalls and complaints, in three stretches
The Acclaim was a mid-size sedan on Chrysler's AA-body, built in Newark, Delaware, from 1988 to December 1994. Wikipedia lists a 2.5-liter K four, a turbocharged 2.5, and a 3.0-liter Mitsubishi V6. It replaced the Caravelle. After a short 1995 model year, the Breeze took its place.
Complaint tallies run to October 10, 2026. Recall vehicle numbers describe entire campaigns, so other cars can be in them.
1989-1990: oil leaks at the valve cover
Engine and engine cooling leads both years: 14 of the 1989's 33 complaints and 15 of the 1990's 60. Recall 89V237000 hit 1989-1990 Acclaims for a valve cover gasket that might slip and let oil leak. The fix was a revised cover sealed with RTV in place of the gasket. That campaign counted 634,000 vehicles, and it also appears on the 1989-1990 Voyager and Sundance.
1991-1992: air bags and four recalls
The 1991 has more complaints and more recalls than any other Acclaim year. Air bags lead the 1991 (14 of 97) and 1992 (11 of 63). The recalls:
- 90V194000 (1991): the two air bag front impact sensors might not be secured to their brackets. 398 vehicles.
- 90V162000 (1991): front brake caliper guide pin bolts might not have been tightened enough and could loosen. 18,000 vehicles.
- 91V122000 (1991): the front outboard seat belt could become hard to latch or unlatch. 130,000 vehicles.
- 92V015000 (1992): zinc plating made the upper steering column coupling bolt brittle enough to break. 20,000 vehicles.
1993-1995: suspension at the end
Suspension leads the 1993 (14 of 72) and the short 1995 run (6 of 30). Power train leads the 1994 (11 of 69). The only recall here is 94V023000: on 200 1994 cars, the seat belt anchor lock bars didn't meet the federal static load standard and were replaced.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Pulled from NHTSA owner reports on October 10, 2026. Acclaims built after 1989 have spent a few less years on the road picking up reports. One complaint each sits under a 1988 and a 1996 model year.

Selling an Acclaim whole
- Note the VIN, the odometer reading and the faults you know about.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Let us know where the Acclaim sits and if it will roll. A car that has sat in a yard is fine; say if the tires are flat. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the Acclaim whole. Please don't pull its engine, wheels or converter.
- When we come for the Acclaim, have its title and a photo ID. No title? See selling with no title.
Is it worth repairing?
Every Acclaim was built in 1994 or earlier, so parts and labor can outrun the car's value fast. Get a quote before you decide, and compare it with what a running Acclaim brings. The old or high-mileage guide walks through that choice. If the air bags went off in a crash, see airbags deployed.
Compare other Plymouths: the Breeze that replaced it, the Caravelle before it, and the Sundance.
Questions people ask
- Which Acclaim year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1991 Acclaim leads with 97 complaints on file October 10, 2026. The 1993 has 72 and the 1994 has 69. Each is a report an owner sent in, not a reliability score, and every year's total is small.
- Was the Acclaim recalled for air bags?
- Yes, in one small campaign. Recall 90V194000 covers 1991 cars whose two front impact sensors might not be secured to their brackets. It counted 398 vehicles. Air bags are also the top complaint area on the 1991 and 1992.
- Will you buy an Acclaim that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
