Selling an old or junk Plymouth Gran Fury
NHTSA's complaint file holds zero owner complaints on the 1984-1989 Plymouth Gran Fury. Its one recall is about the steering wheel itself: on 1988 and 1989 cars, the wheel could crack at its hub weld and come apart from the hub.

Which Gran Fury you have
The name covered three different cars, per Wikipedia:
- 1974-1977, first generation. A full-size C-body car with a 360, 400 or 440 cubic-inch V8 and a 3-speed A727 automatic. It came as a sedan, a hardtop and a coupe.
- 1979-1981, second generation. An R-body car with the 3.7-liter Slant 6. It was dropped midway through 1981 for slow sales, which Wikipedia puts down to poor fuel economy and an outdated platform.
- Third generation. A mid-size M-body car on a 112.6-inch wheelbase, related to the Dodge Diplomat and Chrysler Fifth Avenue. Wikipedia lists US production as 1981-1988.
EPA's fuel economy data lists the Gran Fury from 1984 to 1989, all as a midsize gasoline car. Those are the third-generation cars, and they are the years this page counts.
The steering wheel recall
Recall 91V051000 was reported on April 8, 1991, for 1988 and 1989 Gran Furys. NHTSA's notice says fatigue loading could crack the steering wheel at its mounting hub weld, and the wheel could eventually separate from the hub. The remedy was a revised wheel with arc welds added where the wheel stamping meets the hub.
The campaign counted 12,000 vehicles. That number is for the entire campaign; other models may be part of it.
If you drive a 1988 or 1989, put the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether the wheel was replaced. Our open recall guide covers what an unfixed recall means when you sell.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Numbers reflect NHTSA's records through October 10, 2026. Complaints are reports owners filed with NHTSA. The single recall covers two model years, so it shows on both rows.
| Model year | Owner complaints | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|
| 1984-1987 | 0 each year | 0 |
| 1988 | 0 | 1 (91V051000) |
| 1989 | 0 | 1 (91V051000) |
With no complaints on file for any year, NHTSA's data can't tell you which Gran Fury years gave owners the most trouble.
Repair it or sell it?
On a 1980s sedan that has been parked, one repair rarely ends the list. Price the whole list in writing. Then check what a running 1984-1989 Gran Fury brings in your area. When the repair total nears that figure, selling it unrepaired makes more sense. Our guide to a car sitting for years covers what to check first, and old project car helps if a restoration stalled.
Selling it whole
- Have the title ready, plus the VIN and odometer reading. No title? Start with the no-title guide.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the Gran Fury is parked, whether that's under a carport, in a pole barn or at a storage yard. Note any tire that won't hold air or a rear axle that won't turn; that sets what truck comes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete. If someone already took parts off, list them.
- At pickup, sign the title over. After you sell explains plates and paperwork by state.

Questions people ask
- Has anyone filed an NHTSA complaint about a Gran Fury?
- Not in the current file. Counting through October 10, 2026, NHTSA lists no owner complaints for any Gran Fury model year from 1984 to 1989. So the file can't single out a weak year, which is not the same as a trouble-free car.
- What was the Gran Fury steering wheel recall?
- Recall 91V051000, reported April 8, 1991, covers 1988 and 1989 Gran Furys. Repeated stress could crack the wheel at its hub weld until wheel and hub parted. Owners got a replacement wheel carrying extra arc welds at the stamping-to-hub joint. NHTSA's count of 12,000 vehicles is for the whole campaign, and Gran Furys may be only part of it.
- Will you buy a Gran Fury that hasn't run in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention whether it's in a barn or a driveway, and if the rear wheels turn freely.
- Should I strip the Gran Fury first?
- No. The car goes in one piece. Anything missing, like a pulled engine or the wheels, goes in your description when you request the offer.
