Selling a Plymouth Laser that no longer runs
Sixteen of the 35 complaints owners filed about the 1992 Plymouth Laser name the power train. No other part on any Laser year comes close. The 1992-1994 cars also share a recall for a transfer case that can lock up from too little oil.

Laser problems, split at 1992
EPA data covers the Laser from 1990 to 1994. Wikipedia dates production from 1989 to 1994. Engines were a 1.8-liter Mitsubishi 4G37 four, a 2.0-liter 4G63 four and a 2.0-liter 4G63T turbo four, with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The recall record breaks cleanly at 1992, so this page does too. We tallied these Laser numbers from NHTSA's owner complaint file as it stood October 10, 2026.
1990-1991: buckles, headlamps and engines
These two years hold 60 complaints. On the 1990, engine and engine cooling is named most, 8 times. On the 1991, seat belts lead with 9.
That seat belt pattern lines up with recall 95V103003 for 1990-1991 cars. The front buckle's red plastic release button, marked "PRESS," can break, and pieces can drop into the buckle so it works wrong. NHTSA lists 920,000 vehicles in that campaign. That is the whole campaign, which takes in other models, so it is not a count of Lasers.
The 1990 has three more recalls of its own:
- 89V128000: the headlamp wiring harness can break from the stress of the pop-up headlamps. 5,510 vehicles in the campaign.
- 90V056001: the sunroof's male hinge can come out of its receiver if the roof is worked the wrong way. 265 vehicles.
- 90V106001: diluted primer on the windshield flanges may not hold the glass as the federal standard (FMVSS 212) requires. 184 vehicles.
1992-1994: power train complaints and the transfer case
No Laser year tops the 1992, at 35 complaints. Power train leads at 16, and 7 more follow on the 1993. So 23 of the Laser's 27 power train complaints sit on those two years. One 1992 complaint reports a death.
Recall 98V069002 covers 1992-1994 Lasers. Its notice says the transfer case can lock up from insufficient lubrication. Dealers were to check the transfer case oil level, look for leaks and inspect for wear. The campaign lists 42,214 vehicles, a total that may include other models.
Wikipedia says the Laser "was discontinued after a brief run of 1994 models." The 1995 Neon took its place. Only 4 complaints are on file for the 1994, and 1 more is filed under 1995.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Each figure is an owner report sent to NHTSA, tallied through October 10, 2026, not a count of broken Lasers. Compared with a 1990, a 1994 Laser has spent less time out there gathering reports. A single Laser recall may also cover other years and other models.
| Year | Complaints | Crashes, fires, injuries, deaths reported | Part named most | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1990 | 30 | 1 fire | Engine and engine cooling (8) | 4 |
| 1991 | 30 | 2 crashes, 3 injured | Seat belts (9) | 1 |
| 1992 | 35 | 1 crash, 1 death | Power train (16) | 1 |
| 1993 | 15 | 2 crashes | Power train (7) | 1 |
| 1994 | 4 | 1 fire, 2 injured | Brakes, visibility, engine (1 each) | 1 |
| 1995 | 1 | none | Interior lighting (1) | 0 |
Across all years, the parts named most are power train (27), engine and engine cooling (24), seat belts (17) and structure (12).
Fix the Laser, or sell it?
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. These campaigns are decades old, and the lookup shows whether one is still open on your car.
- A 1992-1994 car that binds or won't move? Have the transfer case looked at before you assume the transmission is gone. The bad transmission guide covers the signs.
- Engine trouble? It's the second-largest complaint group. Blown engine walks through how to weigh it.
- Weigh two figures: the repair quote on paper, and the price a running Laser of that year and condition brings. If the quote is close or higher, read repairs cost more than it is worth.
Selling a Laser whole
- Note the basics: VIN, mileage, front- or all-wheel drive, turbo or not, and what's wrong.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot and whether the car rolls. A Laser with a locked transfer case may not roll at all. Tell us, and the truck that meets the car comes ready to load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole, turbo included. If parts are already gone, say so; missing parts explains why it matters.
- At Laser pickup, our driver looks at your photo ID and collects the title. Missing the title? Start with selling with no title. Plate rules by state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Plymouth Laser year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1992 Laser makes up 35 of the 115 owner reports in NHTSA's files on October 10, 2026. Sixteen of those name the power train. The 1994 has only 4; the last Lasers had fewer years to gather reports, and the 1994 run was short.
- Were 920,000 Lasers recalled for seat belts?
- No. Recall 95V103003 lists 920,000 vehicles, but that is the whole campaign, which covers other models too. It applies to 1990-1991 Lasers, where the red PRESS button on the front buckle can break.
- My all-wheel-drive Laser won't move. Will you still buy it?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention that the wheels lock up, and the driver plans for a car that can't turn them.
- Do I need to pull the turbo or engine before selling?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Leave everything on, and tell us up front about anything already removed.
