A Mitsubishi with a Plymouth badge
Wikipedia describes the Colt as a subcompact made by Mitsubishi Motors and sold in the US as a captive import, with Plymouth selling its own Colt alongside Dodge's. The EPA lists hatchbacks plus the Colt Vista and Colt Wagon, some with four-wheel drive. Recall vehicle totals cover the full campaign, and other models can sit inside those numbers.
1985-1988: fifth generation
Front-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive on some wagons. Wikipedia's engine list for this generation includes a 1.5-liter four, a 1.6-liter DOHC four for the wagon, a 1.6 turbo, and a 1.8-liter four for the 4x4 wagon. Seat belts lead every year that has more than one complaint.
Recall 95V103003 covers 1986-1991 cars. The red plastic front belt buckle buttons marked "PRESS" could break, and pieces could jam the buckle. Colt owners got word to inspect both front buckles. The campaign counted 920,000 vehicles.
1989-1992: sixth generation
The hatchback was built in Kurashiki, Japan. Multi-point fuel injection brought the 1.5-liter four up to 82 horsepower, Wikipedia says, and a 1.6 DOHC and 1.6 turbo were also listed. Complaints stay low until the 1992, which has 26, 18 of them about seat belts.
1993-1994: seventh generation
The 1993 holds nearly half the Colt's whole file. Two recalls on 1992-1993 cars involve the shoulder belt:
- 97V063002: extra grease could deform the rubber cover on the door latch switch. The shoulder belt anchor could then stay at the front pillar when the door closed. 46,000 vehicles.
- 97V073002: the driver's side belt guide rail could wear its cable over time. A new rail with a better seal fixed it. 24,000 vehicles.
Recall 98V168003 is for all-wheel-drive cars from 1992 to 1994. The transfer case could lock up from low lubrication. The campaign counted 6,198 vehicles. The Neon replaced the Colt.
Colt complaints by model year
NHTSA owner reports through October 10, 2026. The 1993-1994 cars have had fewer years than the 1980s cars to pile up reports. No complaints are filed under a 1985 Colt.

Selling your Colt whole
- Find the VIN and say which body you have: hatchback, Vista or wagon, and whether it's four-wheel drive.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the Colt sits and if it can be pushed. On a four-wheel-drive car, say if the wheels turn freely. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it in one piece, and mention parts that are already off.
- The driver needs the title and to see your ID. Lost title? See selling with no title.
Fixing a car built before 1995 rarely pays unless you want to keep it. Compare any quote with what a running Colt sells for, and see the old or high-mileage guide. Type your Colt's VIN into NHTSA's lookup to pull up its recalls.
Questions people ask
- Why are most Colt complaints about seat belts?
- NHTSA's file codes 124 of the Colt's 170 complaints to seat belts, and 64 of those are on the 1993. Three of the Colt's four recalls also involve belts or the door switch that works the shoulder belt. Owner reports like these don't measure reliability.
- Is the Colt Vista or Colt wagon covered here?
- Yes. The EPA lists the Colt, Colt Vista, Colt Vista 4WD, Colt Wagon and Colt Wagon 4WD under the Plymouth Colt, and the counts on this page cover the Colt name as a whole.
- Will you buy a Colt that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
