Selling a junk Plymouth Sundance

Two Plymouth Sundance recalls are about the same bolt: the one holding the lower driver's seat back, which could fail and separate. Seats are the third most-named area in the Sundance's 308 NHTSA complaints, with 32. Only engine and engine cooling and air bags, at 40 each, are named more.

Sundance complaints by model year

Totals from NHTSA's owner reports as of October 10, 2026. Compared with a 1987, a 1993-1994 Sundance has a few fewer years of driving behind it, so owners have filed fewer reports on it. Two complaints sit under a 1995 model year, after production ended.

Known problems, split at the 1989 engine change

Per Wikipedia, Chrysler's P platform Sundance came off the lines at Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Toluca, Mexico, from August 1986 to March 9, 1994. The EPA lists hatchback, convertible and Sundance/Duster versions. The Neon replaced it. Each recall's vehicle figure below is the entire campaign's, so other cars can be part of it.

1987-1988: the 2.2-liter years

The early cars used the 2.2-liter K four, with Turbo I and Turbo IV versions listed, and a 3-speed automatic or 5-speed manual. Plymouth built 75,679 Sundances for 1987 and 88,348 for 1988, Wikipedia's production table shows.

Seat belts are the early thread, leading the 1988 with 10 of 27 complaints. Three recalls apply:

  • 88V105000 (1986-1987): on cold days, fuel could seep from a Sundance at the joint of the supply hose, pressure regulator and fuel rail. 580,000 vehicles.
  • 88V129000 (1988): the front passenger lap belt retractor, with its child-seat locking feature, could malfunction. 6,500 vehicles.
  • 92V053000 (1988-1989): the automatic shoulder belt system could stop working. 115,000 vehicles.

1989-1994: the 2.5 and the seat bolt

"For 1989, the 2.2 engine was replaced by the larger 2.5-liter unit," Wikipedia notes. A 4-speed automatic also appears in the list. On 1989-1990 Sundances, recall 89V237000 handles a valve cover gasket that could shift and drip oil (634,000 vehicles).

Air bag complaints arrive in 1990, leading that year with 11, and peak on the 1993 with 16 of 60. Seats lead the 1991 (7 of 30) and the 1994 (7 of 59). The driver's seat back bolt recalls cover exactly these years: 97V078000 (1991-1992, 148,000 vehicles) and 99V212000 (1991-1994, 227,283).

The steering also drew two recalls. Recall 96V229000 (1991-1992, 675,000 vehicles) covers Sundance steering wheel armatures that could crack and come loose from the hub. Under 92V015000 (1992, 20,000 vehicles), a zinc-plated steering column coupling bolt could turn brittle and break. Recall 90V162000 covers loose front brake caliper guide pin bolts on 1991 cars (18,000 vehicles).

Selling a Sundance whole

  1. Collect the VIN and mileage. Note if the driver's seat back is loose or the car won't start.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits: carport, backyard, storage lot or street. Let us know if the Sundance can roll on its own tires. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole, convertible top and all. Mention anything already removed.
  5. Hand the driver the Sundance title along with your ID. Each state treats plates differently; see after you sell.

Should you fix it first?

The newest Sundance rolled out of the plant in early 1994. Unless you plan to keep it as a project, a big repair rarely makes sense against what a running one sells for. Get a quote and compare. If it's a half-finished project, the project car guide covers your options. If it hasn't moved in years, see car sitting for years. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to see its campaigns.

Other Plymouths: the Neon that replaced it, the Horizon before it, the Acclaim and the Colt.

Questions people ask

What was the Sundance driver's seat recall?
The bolt holding the lower driver's seat back could fail and separate. Recall 97V078000 covered 1991-1992 cars (148,000 vehicles) and 99V212000 covered 1991-1994 cars (227,283). Both replaced the bolt with a stronger one. Both vehicle totals span the full campaign, other cars possibly included.
Which Sundance year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1993, with 60 as of October 10, 2026, just ahead of the 1994 with 59. They're owner reports and say nothing about overall reliability.
Will you buy a Sundance that has been parked for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention if the Sundance tires stay inflated and the wheels spin.
