Selling a damaged or non-running Plymouth Prowler

One 1999 Prowler recall ended with dealers replacing the cars. Some aluminum frame castings had missed their heat treatment and came out soft, and NHTSA's remedy line reads "Dealers will replace these vehicles." In owner complaints, the bigger thread is the suspension: 29 of the 59 on file name it.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Prowler owners sent these reports to NHTSA; our count stops at October 10, 2026. They are not a tally of breakdowns, and a 2001 had two fewer years than a 1999 to pile them up.

EPA data lists the Prowler for 1999 to 2001. Three complaints are filed under 2002. Wikipedia says the car was sold as a Chrysler Prowler for 2001 and 2002.

What the record shows on this car

The Prowler had one generation. Wikipedia lists production from 1997 to 2002, a 3.5-liter V6 mounted front-mid, rear-wheel drive and a 4-speed 42LE automatic. It was assembled by hand at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit.

Front ball joints

Recall 03V034000 covers 1999-2002 cars. The front lower control arm ball joints can lose lubrication, wear fast and possibly separate from the steering knuckle. Dealers replace them with modified assemblies, and owner letters began April 4, 2003. That recall counts 11,698 vehicles, and other models may be part of that number. Suspension is the most-named part on every year from 1999 to 2001.

Frame castings

Structure is the second-largest complaint group, 15, and 7 of those are on the 2001. Recall 99V313000 covers only 1999 cars: soft frame castings that skipped heat treatment. That campaign lists 546 vehicles.

Brakes, gauges and a manual

  • 99V245000 (1999): Prowler brakes fell short of the federal hydraulic brake standard, FMVSS 105. Dealers add a wiring jumper to the brake pressure differential switch. 3,102 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 98V104000 (1999): the backlight bulbs for the gear-position display and odometer were not seated. Dealers replace the instrument cluster. 457 vehicles.
  • 00V366000 (2000-2001): an addendum to the owner's manual about child-seat anchors. Its 1,211,756 count covers passenger cars, pickups and SUVs, so it is not a Prowler number.

Repair or sell?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for the ball joint campaign.
  2. If a joint let go and the front end hit something, look at both the suspension and the frame. See broken suspension and frame damage.
  3. Ask for a quote in writing and check it against the price of a running Prowler from that year. When the fix uses up most of that, selling is the better call.

Selling a Prowler whole

  1. Have the VIN, mileage and the damage written down, and note whether it carries Plymouth or Chrysler badges.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know where the Prowler sits and if all four wheels spin. A folded front wheel is fine; we just need to know before the truck meets the car. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. The Prowler's title and your photo ID should be on hand when we arrive. After you sell covers plates and insurance.

Other Plymouths: the Neon, Breeze and Voyager, or all of Plymouth.

Questions people ask

Which Prowler problem do owners report most often?
For the Prowler it's the suspension, in 29 of the 59 owner reports on file with NHTSA as of October 10, 2026. Structure is next with 15. Recall 03V034000 covers the front lower ball joints on 1999-2002 cars.
Why does NHTSA list 2002 Prowler complaints?
Three complaints are filed under 2002. Wikipedia says the car was marketed as a Chrysler Prowler for the 2001 and 2002 model years, after Plymouth was dropped.
Will you buy a Prowler with a collapsed front wheel?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention the damaged corner when you ask, and the driver brings what it takes to load a roadster that can't roll.
