Selling an old or broken Ram ProMaster City

More than half of the ProMaster City's NHTSA complaints are on its first two model years. Owners filed 27 about the 2015 and 25 about the 2016, 52 of 100 in all. After 2018 the count never goes above five in a year.

A short-lived van

The ProMaster City appears in EPA data for 2015 through 2022, classed as a special purpose vehicle with gasoline power, and it's no longer sold. Wikipedia also notes Ram has used the ProMaster City name since 2015 for two different van models.

Each ProMaster City count is an owner's report to NHTSA, pulled on October 10, 2026, and none of them is a rating. Later vans had fewer years in service before this count, though the 2019-2022 vans have now been out for several.

What owners and recalls point to

2015-2018

These four years hold 87 of the 100 complaints. Power train and electrical tie at 10 each on the 2015. The engine leads on 2017 and 2018.

Recalls on these years:

  • Trailer tow lights (16V253000). The trailer tow light control module is replaced on 2015-2016 vans. The 6,422 vehicles include some full-size ProMasters.
  • Steering rack (18V149000). On 225 2018 vans, the hydraulic steering gear may have a casting flaw that can crack and leak fluid. Dealers inspect it and replace the rack if needed.
  • Tire placards (17V601000 and 18V129000). Wrong load, occupant and tire pressure information on 2015-2018 placards.
  • Fire extinguishers (17V824000). Kidde extinguishers in many Dodge, Chrysler and Ram vehicles. Owners contact Kidde for a replacement.
  • One van (16V953000). A single 2017 van whose side curtain air bags might not inflate properly.

2019-2022

Just 13 complaints across these years. The recalls are small too:

  • Turn signals (21V728000). If a bulb fails on a 2019-2021 van, the flash rate may not change to warn you. Dealers update the body controller software.
  • Child seat belts (21V699000). Automatic locking retractors may switch off early on 2021 vans, so a child seat might not stay secure. The campaign includes the full-size ProMaster.
  • ABS module (21V147000). Four 2020-2021 vans whose ABS module may be damaged inside.

The 2022 has no recall campaigns listed.

Fix or sell

If the repair quote is close to what the van would sell for running, sell it whole instead.

  1. Check recalls at NHTSA with the VIN, especially the steering rack on a 2018.
  2. Electrical faults are the top complaint overall. See electrical problems.
  3. Worn out from miles? Old or high mileage covers when to stop putting money in.

Selling it whole

  1. Have ready: VIN, mileage, cargo or passenger version, and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us the address and if the wheels turn.
  4. Leave it as is, shelving and partitions included. Name any pulled parts when you ask; they affect the offer.
  5. Keep the title, keys and your ID handy for the driver. After you sell covers plates and insurance.

Questions people ask

Is the Ram ProMaster City still made?
EPA data lists it for the 2015 through 2022 model years and shows it as no longer sold. Wikipedia notes that Ram has used the ProMaster City name since 2015 for two different van models.
Was there really a recall for one van?
Yes. Recall 16V953000 covered a single 2017 ProMaster City built on November 5, 2016, whose side curtain air bags might not inflate properly. Recall 21V147000 covered four 2020-2021 vans with a possibly damaged ABS module.
Will you buy a high-mileage ProMaster City that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and small vans, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the mileage, what's wrong and where it's parked.
