Where the Astra came from
EPA lists the Astra for 2008 and 2009 only, as a gasoline 2-door and 4-door hatchback. Wikipedia files it under the Opel Astra. Its section on the third-generation Astra H, built at Opel's plant in Antwerp, Belgium, names the Saturn Ion as the US predecessor. It names the Chevrolet Cruze as the successor for the Saturn Astra.
What owners reported
| Model year | Complaints | Air bags | Electrical | Power train | Reported a crash | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 162 | 96 | 16 | 16 | 5 | 1 |
| 2009 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
After those three, owners named steering (5), the "unknown or other" category (5) and visibility (4). Three complaints report a fire and seven list injuries; none reports a death. A 2009 Astra has had a slightly shorter window for owner filings, and the data doesn't say what else lies behind a split this lopsided.
The one recall: the driver's air bag inflator
Recall 16V063000, filed February 3, 2016, concerns the driver's frontal air bag inflator in 2008-2009 Astras. The same GM campaign covers 2006-2011 Saab 9-3 and 2006-2009 Saab 9-5 cars, so its count of 113,716 vehicles is not Astras alone. On the Saabs, dealers replace the driver's frontal inflator; the part of the record we hold is cut off before it describes the Astra's fix. Your VIN shows whether the campaign is still open.
The recall is the only one NHTSA lists for the Astra. It lines up with the component owners named most, though the complaint counts alone don't say how many complaints are about the inflator.
Fix it or sell it?
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. If 16V063000 is open, read open recall before you decide.
- Electrical faults (16 complaints on the 2008): electrical problems covers when to stop chasing them.
- Transmission or drivetrain (17 power train complaints): see bad transmission.
- Compare the numbers. If the repair quote nears what a running Astra would sell for, selling it as is is worth weighing.
