Selling a junk or non-running Saturn Ion

Of the 4,343 Saturn Ion complaints sitting in NHTSA's files, 1,535 name the steering, more than any other system. The electrical system is next at 1,299. Both land on recalls GM opened in 2014, seven years after the last Ion left the plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Start with the 2014 ignition recalls

In February 2014 the Ion was added to GM's faulty ignition switch recall, according to Wikipedia, after 13 deaths were tied to the defect in Chevrolet Cobalt models. NHTSA lists two campaigns that cover every Ion year from 2003 to 2007:

  • 14V047 (air bags): dealers replace the ignition switch free of charge. Until the Ion is repaired, GM's notice says to drive with the ignition key alone on the ring.
  • 14V171 (ignition cylinder): covers Ions built with the defective cylinder, plus the Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice and G5, and Chevrolet HHR and Cobalt.

Campaign 14V047 counts 2,190,934 vehicles; 14V171 counts 2,191,014. Those are totals across several GM models, not Ion numbers.

The 2003-2004 cars: electrical and early recalls

The Ion was built on GM's Delta platform, related to the Chevrolet Cobalt. For the Ion, Wikipedia names a 2.2-liter L61 four-cylinder paired with a 5-speed Getrag manual. The quad coupes from 2002 to 2004 used a VTi CVT that was later dropped, and the Aisin 5-speed automatic was discontinued in 2005.

These two years hold 1,655 complaints. On the 2003, the electrical system leads with 345 of 757. On the 2004, steering edges past it, 312 to 290. Of the four deaths reported in the Ion's complaints, three are on the 2004.

Most of the Ion's early recalls landed here:

  • 04V003: fuel filters on 2.2-liter cars that could corrode on the outside. Dealers replace the filter assembly. The campaign covers 127,285 vehicles.
  • 04V004: power windows and sunroof that did not meet federal standard 118. Dealers upgrade the body control module calibration.
  • 04V547: front turn signal and daytime running lamps that can quit when the bulb loses contact with its socket. 178,798 vehicles in the campaign.
  • 04V281: a fuel feed pipe on the supercharged 2.0-liter LSJ engine that could crack and leak fuel near the fuel rail. 670 vehicles.

The 2005-2007 cars: steering takes over

From 2005 on, steering leads every year: 239 complaints on the 2005, 500 on the 2006 and 367 on the 2007. That's 1,106 of the 2,684 complaints for those three years. On 2004-2007 Ions, the electric steering assist falls under recall 14V153. That campaign's 1,373,177 vehicles include Malibus, Malibu Maxx wagons, HHRs, Cobalts, Auras and G6s, so only part of the count is Ions. Dealers perform one of four GM bulletins.

Fuel is the other thread. The 2006 has 112 complaints naming the gasoline fuel system, and the 2007 has 116 naming fuel and propulsion. Two fuel pump module recalls are regional. 09V419 reaches 2006-2007 cars sold new or later registered in Arizona and Nevada (69,139 vehicles, Cobalt and G5 included). 12V459 covers 2007 cars in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas (49,768 vehicles, with the Equinox and Torrent).

Production ended March 29, 2007, and the Astra replaced the Ion for 2008. That's why the 2008 row below holds just four complaints.

Complaints and recalls by model year

These Ion numbers come from NHTSA complaints read on October 10, 2026. "Crashes" means complaints in which the owner said a crash happened. An Ion recall reaching several model years shows up under every one, so the column sums past 10. A younger car has simply had fewer years for owners to file.

Repair the Ion or let it go?

Compare the shop quote with what a running Ion with about the same miles sells for. When the estimate nears that price, an Ion sold unrepaired is usually the better deal. Go in this order:

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall search. An ignition switch that was never replaced under 14V047 is dealer work, not your bill.
  2. Stalls, no-starts or dead accessories? Our electrical problems guide covers how to judge it. Lost the only key? See no keys.
  3. Steering assist gone? Find out if a dealer ever did the 14V153 work, then price the repair in writing against the Ion's running value. When repairs cost more than the car walks through the math.

How to sell your Ion whole

  1. Jot down the Ion's VIN and odometer reading, plus the fault and whether the car rolls.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the Ion sits, whether that's a carport, a curb or a shop's back row. Flag a locked steering column so the driver brings the right gear. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole. Keep the battery, converter and wheels on the Ion; list anything someone already took.
  5. When the Ion is picked up, the driver takes the keys and the signed title. No title? Start with our no-title guide. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Saturn Ion model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2006 leads with 1,235, counted October 10, 2026. The 2004 (898), 2007 (876) and 2003 (757) trail it. Steering is the system named most on every year from 2004 through 2007.
Is my Ion part of the GM ignition switch recall?
Every Ion from 2003 to 2007 is listed in recalls 14V047 and 14V171. Under 14V047, dealers replace the ignition switch free of charge. To learn if your Ion already has the replacement switch, type its VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Did the Saturn Ion have a CVT?
Some did. Wikipedia says the VTi CVT used in the quad coupes from 2002 to 2004 was discontinued, and the Aisin 5-speed automatic was dropped in 2005. A 5-speed Getrag manual was also offered.
Will you buy an Ion that won't start or steer?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. If the steering wheel is locked or the front wheels won't point straight, mention it when you ask.
