Selling a damaged or dead Subaru Solterra
Two of the Solterra's five recalls told owners to stop driving. Both covered 2023 cars whose wheel hub bolts could loosen until a wheel came off. If your Solterra is wrecked, won't power on, or has a warning you don't want to chase, you can sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What owners reported, year by year
There is one Solterra generation so far. Wikipedia lists production from April 2022, with Toyota as the manufacturer, the e-TNGA platform and a BluE Nexus eAxle. The EPA lists three versions, all with all-wheel drive: Solterra AWD, Solterra 20 AWD and Solterra Limited/Touring AWD.
By October 10, 2026, NHTSA had 77 owner complaints on this car. In 21, the electrical system was the problem, the most of any part.
2023: the wheel hub year
The launch year holds 42 complaints, and 5 of them report a crash. Electrical system (7), service brakes (6) and unknown or other (6) are named most.
Four recall campaigns cover the 2023. The first, 22V444, was reported June 23, 2022. Dealers replaced the hub bolts and wheels at no charge. That campaign lists 661 vehicles, and it covered the Toyota bZ4X as well as the Solterra. Subaru's own campaign, 23V064, followed on February 9, 2023: dealers inspect the hub bolts and tighten them if needed. It lists 1,182 vehicles, all described as 2023 Solterras. Wikipedia says Toyota reported a fix on October 6, 2022 and restarted production.
2023-2025: defroster and camera software
Two recalls reach across three model years. Recall 25V577 says some HVAC failures, a dead electric compressor for one, can stop the defroster and defogger from working right. Dealers update the HVAC control software and replace the compressor if needed. Its 94,320 vehicles include the bZ4X and Lexus RZ, so that number is not Solterras alone.
25V744 covers cars with the Panoramic View Monitor. Dealers update the parking assist software, and letters went out January 2, 2026. Its 1,024,407 vehicles span Toyota, Lexus and Subaru models.
The 2024 has 14 complaints, led by the electrical system (5) and forward collision avoidance (4). The 2025 has just 4.
2026: battery control software
The 2026 has 17 complaints. Nine name the electrical system and 3 name exterior lighting. On the Solterra, recall 26V393 deals with the high-voltage battery's control computer. Dealers update its software, and owner letters went out August 17, 2026. The campaign's 20,991 vehicles include the Toyota bZ and Lexus RZ. No 2027 complaints are on file yet.
Complaints and recalls by model year
We pulled each Solterra complaint count on this page from NHTSA data on October 10, 2026. A Solterra recall that reaches more than one year is listed under every year it touches.
| Year | Owner complaints | Crashes reported | Named most | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 42 | 5 | Electrical system (7) | 4 |
| 2024 | 14 | 2 | Electrical system (5) | 2 |
| 2025 | 4 | 0 | Suspension, power train (1 each) | 2 |
| 2026 | 17 | 0 | Electrical system (9) | 1 |
Repair the Solterra or sell it broken?
- Run the VIN first. Every Solterra recall remedy is listed as free at a dealer. Check NHTSA's lookup before you pay for anything.
- Battery or power warnings? On a 2026, ask whether the 26V393 software update was done. If the pack itself is the problem, our EV battery guide walks through the choice.
- Crash damage? An insurer may total a Solterra for damage that looks small. See insurer totaled it.
Selling a Solterra whole
- Note the VIN, the mileage, and whether the car powers on and rolls.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits: a garage, a driveway, a body shop. If a wheel is off or loose from the hub problem, say so, so the right truck comes.
- Don't pull the battery, wheels or charging cable before it goes.
- Keep your ID and the title close by. Still paying on it? Read still owe on the loan first.

Questions people ask
- Which Solterra model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- It's the 2023. By October 10, 2026, it drew 42 of the 77 owner complaints. Next come the 2026 at 17, the 2024 at 14 and the 2025 at 4. A recent car has spent fewer months with owners, so a small number here can mislead.
- Was my Solterra part of the loose wheel recall?
- If it is a 2023, it may have been. Campaigns 22V444 and 23V064 both covered 2023 Solterras whose hub bolts could loosen, and both told owners not to drive until a dealer had done the work. Enter a Solterra VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and you'll learn if your car ever got that fix.
- Will you buy a Solterra that won't power on?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and there is free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know if it turns on, if the wheels still roll, and the spot it sits in.
- Should I take the battery or wheels off before I sell?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Keep the battery pack, wheels and charging cable in place, and tell us early if any of it has been taken off.
