Selling a dead or junk Suzuki Aerio
Nearly a third of all Suzuki Aerio complaints to NHTSA are on one year. The 2003 has 36 of the model's 115, counted as of October 10, 2026, and 11 of those 36 name the power train. No other Aerio year comes close on power train.

About the Aerio
Wikipedia gives the Aerio's production as 2001 to 2007, built in Kosai, Shizuoka, Japan. Wikipedia names the Suzuki Cultus as its predecessor and the SX4 as its successor, though production carried on in Pakistan and China. The EPA lists it both as a compact car (the sedan) and as a small station wagon (the SX), with front-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.
Known problems, grouped by year
The complaints split into two clear stretches.
2002-2003: the power train year and two recalls
The 2002 has 13 complaints, led by suspension (4). The 2003 jumps to 36, with 11 naming the power train and 6 the wheels. Six 2003 complaints report an injury.
Both Aerio recalls reach these years:
- 07V307, 2002-2006: on cars with the 5-speed manual, the retaining clip that holds the gear shift cable to the shift lever was the wrong shape and could contact the lever housing. Dealers swapped in a differently shaped clip; the recall began August 13, 2007. The campaign's 14,251 vehicles may include other models.
- 03V223, 2002-2003: paint adhesion problems at the windshield. Of the 5,319 vehicles in that campaign, 777 were 2002 Aerios and 2,368 were 2003 Aerios. The rest were Esteems, Grand Vitaras and Grand Vitara XL-7s.
2004-2007: tires, suspension and brakes
Power train drops back after 2003. The 2004 has 14 complaints, 5 about tires. The 2005 has 22, with suspension at 7, and three of its complaints report a fire. The 2006 has 27, with hydraulic brakes at 5 and the engine and air bags at 4 each. The 2007 has just 3.
Aerio complaints and recalls by model year
We took these Aerio counts from NHTSA complaints on October 10, 2026. A recall that spans several years shows up under each one.
| Year | Owner complaints | Crash | Fire | Injured | Recalls | Top parts named |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2002 | 13 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Suspension 4, hydraulic brakes 3 |
| 2003 | 36 | 3 | 1 | 6 | 2 | Power train 11, wheels 6 |
| 2004 | 14 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | Tires 5, suspension 2, power train 2 |
| 2005 | 22 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 1 | Suspension 7, hydraulic brakes 3, tires 3 |
| 2006 | 27 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes 5, engine 4, air bags 4 |
| 2007 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0 | Air bags, brakes, electric brakes (1 each) |
Across all years, power train (15) and hydraulic brakes (14) are named most, then suspension and tires at 13 each. No complaint reports a death. The 2007 had the shortest run and less time to collect complaints.
Fix it or let it go?
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup, especially on a 2002-2006 manual car.
- Won't go into gear, slips or grinds: the bad transmission guide covers what to check before paying for a rebuild.
- Brakes pulsing, grinding or soft: see bad brakes.
- Then weigh it: a shop's written estimate on one side, a running Aerio's market value on the other. If the estimate is larger, selling it unrepaired is the simpler path.

Questions people ask
- Which Aerio year has the most NHTSA complaints?
