Selling an old or junk Suzuki Esteem

Structure came up most in Suzuki Esteem owner reports, 25 of 121 in the NHTSA file as of October 10, 2026. Next were suspension at 19 and hydraulic brakes at 14. The newest Esteems are 2002 models, so any one still around is well over twenty years old.

The Esteem in brief

Wikipedia lists production in Japan from 1995 to 2002, at Suzuki's Sagara plant in Shizuoka among others. Wikipedia lists a 5-speed manual, 3- and 4-speed automatics and a CVT among its transmissions. The EPA files it as a subcompact car and a small station wagon. Wikipedia says the range "was pulled from the market in Europe and North America in 2002, after one year of overlapping with the Aerio/Liana." The Aerio replaced it.

Problems owners reported, by era

This page splits the Esteem's years where the complaint mix shifts.

1995-1997: brakes first

NHTSA's file holds 13 complaints on the 1995, the year before the EPA data starts, and 6 of them name the hydraulic brakes. The 1996 (5 complaints) and 1997 (7) are quiet, with brakes, electrical and structure each showing up once or twice.

1998-2002: structure and suspension

Complaints climb with the 1998: 24 of them, 7 reporting a crash. Suspension leads that year with 6 and air bags follow with 5. The 2000 tops the list at 26, split evenly between suspension and structure at 6 each. On the 2001, structure alone is 9 of 21.

The one recall, 03V223, covers the 2002. Its notice says certain vehicles had insufficient paint adhesion at the windshield; dealers were to inspect them and repaint where needed. The campaign counts 5,319 vehicles, of which 111 were 2002 Esteems. The rest were 2002-2003 Aerios, Grand Vitaras and Grand Vitara XL-7s.

That's 121 complaints, 18 reporting a crash, 1 a fire and none a death. The 2002 has had less time than the earlier years to collect complaints, and it was also the last year sold.

Worth fixing?

At this age the question is usually one big repair against a car that's worth little running.

  • Clunks, wandering or a sagging corner: that's suspension, the second-most-named part. See broken suspension.
  • Soft pedal or grinding: read bad brakes before you drive it anywhere.
  • Failed a state inspection for rust or body damage: failed inspection or rust covers what the inspector looks for.
  • Get the repair quote on paper, then see what a running Esteem in the same condition sells for. A repair bigger than that number points to selling.

How to sell an Esteem

  1. Locate the VIN plate and the title. Missing title? Begin with selling with no title.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us if it's a sedan or a wagon, whether it runs, and where it's parked. The truck meets the car there, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it in one piece. Pulled parts change the offer.
  5. After pickup, see after you sell for plates and insurance.

Other Suzukis: the Swift, Sidekick and Aerio, or all Suzuki models.
