SX4 complaints and recalls, year by year

Newer SX4 years haven't been driven as long, which gives them fewer chances to pick up reports. A campaign covering several model years shows in each of their rows.

No complaint on any SX4 year reports a death. Eight report a fire.

What the SX4 is

Wikipedia describes the first-generation SX4 as a subcompact that replaced the Aerio, built as a hatchback and a sedan, with the hatchback offered in front- or four-wheel drive. Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign styled it. Wikipedia lists 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 four-cylinder engines for that generation, with manual gearboxes, a 4-speed automatic, and a CVT from the 2010 model. In the EPA's data the SX4 runs 2007-2013. The page splits it where the CVT shows up.

2007-2009: the passenger seat sensor

These three years hold 222 complaints, and 148 of them name air bags. Recall 13V405 applies to 2007-2011 SX4s. The sensor mat that classifies the front passenger could wear out and fail, so dealers put in a new seat cushion assembly with the mat. The campaign counts 189,901 vehicles, and the 2006-2011 Grand Vitara is part of it.

Two smaller campaigns touch these years. Recall 10V513 replaced the three screws holding each outside mirror to its base, which could come loose, on the 2007 hatchback and 2008-2010 hatchback and sedan; 69,587 vehicles. 2008-2010 SX4s fitted with a Garmin nuvi 750, 760 or 765 GPS fall under recall 10V392. Garmin technicians swapped in a new GPS battery. That campaign also includes the 2010 Grand Vitara and the 2009-2010 Equator.

2010-2013: steering pumps and the CVT

These four years hold 89 complaints, and the mix changes. Air bags fade, and steering leads the 2012 with 14.

Power steering pump, recalled twice. Recall 15V587 covers 2012-2013 SX4s built September 3, 2011 to April 5, 2013, for insufficient clearance around the power steering pump; dealers replaced the pump, starting October 9, 2015. Recall 18V804 came back to the same 2012-2013 cars: the pump could seize and cause a loss of steering assist. Dealers fitted an improved pump, starting October 25, 2019. Both campaigns list 18,673 vehicles.

Shifter and CVT. Recall 14V811 replaced the shift selector assembly on 2010-2013 SX4s and Kizashis, filed under gear position indication; 60,823 vehicles across both models. Two campaigns cover the 2013 CVT. Recall 18V331 replaced a transmission control module that could fail on 2013 SX4s and Kizashis with a CVT; 5,786 vehicles. Recall 13V572, filed by Suzuki del Caribe, had dealers check and tighten the torque converter bolts on 142 CVT cars built December 26, 2012 to February 4, 2013.

NHTSA also lists recall 11V055, a belt tension adjuster pulley, for the 2010-2011 SX4, though its description names the Grand Vitara.

Worth a repair?

Ask for the repair cost on paper. Compare it with the asking price of running SX4s near your mileage. When the two are near each other, the repair rarely pays back.
