Selling an old or junk Suzuki Swift
More than a third of the NHTSA complaints on the Suzuki Swift report someone hurt: 15 of 41, counted as of October 10, 2026. Nine report a crash. That's a small file for a nameplate the EPA tracks from 1985 to 2011, and every complaint in it is on a 1989 to 2002 car.

Where the Swift name came from
Wikipedia says the Swift name "began in 1984 as an export name for the Suzuki Cultus," built in hatchback, sedan and convertible forms with Suzuki's G engine family. Its second generation ran from 1988 to 2003. The EPA data also files the Forsa, Forsa Turbo and SA310 names under Swift. The yellow car in the photo is a 2010 Swift Sport photographed in Australia, a later design than the cars in NHTSA's file.
Complaints and recalls by era
1989-1994: hood latch and seat belts
Two recalls cover these years. Recall 93V189, on 1989-1993 cars, found misplaced spot welds on the hood striker that could crack the inner hood panel so the latch might not catch; the fix added two bolts and nuts. NHTSA's 38,229-vehicle total covers the full campaign and may reach beyond the Swift. Recall 95V103, on 1989-1991 cars, covered red front buckle release buttons that could break; its 127,155 vehicles include Samurais. Complaints peak here, at 7 each on the 1991 and 1993.
1995-2002: shifter and manual
On the 1997, recall 98V225 covered automatics whose shift lever could leave Park without the key or the detent button (1,198 vehicles); dealers replaced the shifter. Three of that year's four complaints name the power train. On the 2000, recall 00V286 sent owners a new manual because the original lacked required child restraint anchorage information (1,593 vehicles).
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recalls | Parts named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1989 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Speed control, seat belts, seats (1 each) |
| 1990 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Latches, fuel system, seat belts (1 each) |
| 1991 | 7 | 1 | 1 | 2 | Seat belts 2 |
| 1993 | 7 | 1 | 2 | 1 | Structure 2 |
| 1994 | 5 | 2 | 3 | 0 | Seat belts, brakes, air bags (1 each) |
| 1995 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Seats 1 |
| 1997 | 4 | 2 | 4 | 1 | Power train 3 |
| 1998 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | Air bags 2 |
| 2000-2002 | 7 | 2 | 2 | 1 (2000) | Air bags, seats, brakes, suspension |
Model years missing from the table have no complaints on file. Air bags and seat belts lead overall at 6 apiece, and none of the 41 reports a death. Late Swift hatchbacks haven't been driven as far yet, and their owners have sent NHTSA fewer complaints to date.
Keep it or sell it?
For a Swift this old, the repair usually outweighs the car. If age and miles are the problem, see old or high mileage; if it hasn't moved in a long time, read sitting for years. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup either way.

Questions people ask
- Which Swift year has the most NHTSA complaints?

- Was the Swift part of the Samurai seat belt recall?
- Yes. Recall 95V103 includes 1989-1991 Swifts and 1988-1991 Samurais. On the Swift, it cautions that each front belt buckle's red PRESS button can break and shed pieces inside. The 127,155 vehicles in the campaign count both models.
