Selling a dead or junk Suzuki X-90

Seven of the 12 Suzuki X-90 complaints in NHTSA's owner file report a crash. That is a small file, counted as of October 10, 2026, and crash reports make up more than half of it. The X-90 also has no recall campaigns on record at all.

The X-90 by model year

Model yearComplaintsCrashes reportedComponents namedRecalls
199696Air bags 4, hydraulic brakes 2, steering 10
199721Engine and engine cooling 1, hydraulic brakes 10
199810Electrical system 10

The 1996 holds most of the file: 9 complaints, 6 crash reports and both injury reports. The single fire report is on a 1997. Normally a later model year shows fewer complaints because it has been on the road for less time; with all three X-90 years now decades old, that gap matters little here.

One short generation

The X-90 ran only three model years in EPA data, 1996 to 1998, and EPA files it as a two-seater in 2WD, 4WD and RWD versions. Wikipedia gives production as 1995 to 1997 at Iwata, Shizuoka, in Japan. It calls the X-90 a subcompact on a body-on-frame chassis, related to the Suzuki Vitara, and the US successor to the Suzuki Samurai.

Wikipedia lists one engine for the X-90, a 1.6-liter SOHC G16A, paired with a manual gearbox (five speeds) or an automatic (four speeds). The complaints split by system:

  • Air bags (4 complaints). All on the 1996. An X-90 whose bags fired in a wreck is covered in airbags deployed.
  • Hydraulic service brakes (3). Two on the 1996, one on the 1997. A car that has sat often comes back with seized or leaking brakes; bad brakes covers it.
  • Steering, speed control, door latches, engine cooling, electrical. One complaint each.

Repair it or sell it?

With no recalls, nothing here gets fixed for free. Start with the repair quote. Then ask what a running X-90 actually sells for where you live; a two-seat 4x4 from the 1990s is not an easy car to price. Once the X-90 repair quote nears that number, skipping the repair usually makes more sense. More on that math: repairs that outrun the car's value.

Parked since the last century? Read car sitting for years before you buy a battery and tires.

Selling it whole

  1. Have the X-90's VIN and odometer reading handy, and tell us what's wrong. Note 2WD or 4WD.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it sits: driveway, garage, back lot or a repair shop. Say whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. If your X-90 is missing a part, mention it when you request an offer, because it affects the number.
  5. The title and a photo ID are what you'll need at pickup. Old cars lose titles all the time; start with selling with no title. After the sale, after you sell covers plates and insurance.
