Selling a junk or dead car in Herriman

A Herriman car bound for scrap cannot simply be crushed. Before a Herriman car is crushed or parted out, Utah law has the owner mail in its title to be canceled with a dismantling permit application. That paperwork is one reason many owners sell the car whole instead. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US, from the neighborhoods around Zions Bank Stadium to the edge of town.

Herriman's own rules

Our search for Herriman's municipal code found nothing, so this page is based on Utah statute. Herriman could still set stricter limits for a dead or unregistered car at a house or on a street, and a call to the city settles that.

State law does define an abandoned vehicle. On public or private property, that means a car left "in excess of seven days without express or implied consent" of whoever controls the property. On a highway, the limit is 48 hours. Either one is an infraction, and a peace officer with reasonable grounds may remove the car.

Scrap, salvage and nonrepairable cars

Utah sorts a damaged car into a few legal boxes, and each one changes the paperwork:

  • Salvage vehicle: hurt by a crash, flood or other event badly enough that fixing it to run safely costs more than the car's fair market value. An insurer or another jurisdiction can also declare it salvage.
  • Nonrepairable vehicle: worth nothing for resale except as parts or scrap, or marked by its owner, permanently, as a parts or scrap car.
  • Abandoned and inoperable: once an investigator states in writing that the Herriman car cannot be rebuilt, it can be scrapped and skip the dismantling permit steps. The salvage buyer signs a pledge not to rebuild it.

For a dead Herriman car no one will rebuild, State Tax Commission staff can issue a Junk Permit, officially the "Affidavit of Abandoned and Inoperable Vehicle". Once a Herriman owner has the permit, the car can be parted out or taken to a dismantler, crusher or salvage dealer licensed by the state.

Does your car have a salvage certificate or a branded title? Put that in writing for the buyer first, and say it in any ad. See salvage title and nonrepairable title.

Salt Lake County emissions

Salt Lake County, home to Herriman, is one of five Utah counties that test emissions. Cars under six model years old get tested every second year, matched to the calendar: an even model year in even years, an odd model year in odd ones. The 2026 county table marks 2020 through 1996 as Required and 1995 and older as Not required. When you sell in Herriman, give the buyer the car's current emission certificate if it has one.

The Taylorsville title office

The DMV office we checked for Salt Lake County is at 4315 S 2700 W, Suite 1200, in Taylorsville. In a straight line it is around 13 miles north of central Herriman. Phone: 801-297-7780.

Title and plates

  • Utah needs no notary on the seller's signature.
  • AND between two owners' names means both sign; OR means one does.
  • Once the deal is done, Utah gives you 48 hours to get the title to the buyer.
  • No odometer statement (TC-891) is needed for a car 20 years old or older.
  • A lost title can go to the buyer on Form TC-123, or you can order a $6.00 duplicate.

Pull your plates off unless the buyer is getting them. If you leave a plate on the car, the next driver's parking tickets and moving violations could be traced back to you. Then report the sale. After you sell lists each way to do it.

Nearby towns

Riverton is about 3.5 miles away and South Jordan about 4.6. West Jordan and Draper are each about 8 miles out, and Lehi, over the county line, is about 9.4. The Utah page covers the whole state.

Getting an offer

To start, use the form or ring (877) 421-6008. Our short form covers what we need on a Herriman car. In Herriman our truck comes to the car itself, and a garage, a curb spot or a body shop all work.

Questions people ask

Can I just haul my old car to the crusher?
Not on its title alone. Utah first wants the title sent in to be cancelled, with an application to dismantle attached. Utah lets you skip that step once an investigator writes that the car cannot be rebuilt.
Is there a Herriman ordinance on junk cars at home?
Our search did not turn one up, so everything here rests on Utah statute. Herriman could still have local limits; confirm with the city before a dead car settles in at home.
My car has a salvage title. Do I have to tell the buyer?
Yes. Utah wants written notice handed to the buyer ahead of the sale, and the brand has to appear in any ad as well.
Where do I report the car sold?
The Motor Vehicle Portal takes it online. You can also call 1-800-DMV-UTAH, send form TC-502, or post a signed letter naming the car's year and make plus its plate number or VIN.
