Selling a junk or dead car in Riverton
A car that quits on 12600 South, the state route that runs through Riverton as SR-71, has 48 hours. After that, Utah law calls an unattended car on a highway abandoned, and an officer who has reasonable grounds may have it towed. A Riverton seller meets the same number twice: state law also gives sellers 48 hours to hand over the title. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

Off the road: yards, lots and tow lots
Riverton's code on junk cars did not turn up online. Riverton may have rules of its own, and the state's apply regardless. Off the highway, the statute's limit is "a period in excess of seven days without express or implied consent of the owner or person in control of the property," and abandoning a car is an infraction. Impound adds another clock for any car eight or more model years old: 30 days from the first notice to reclaim it, after which Utah may let the towing company take a certificate of sale.
Emissions years in Salt Lake County
Riverton is in Salt Lake County, one of five counties where Utah applies emissions tests. The county's 2026 table marks every model year from 2020 down to 1996 Required, while 1995 and earlier show Not required. Cars less than six years old go every other year: even model years in even years, odd in odd. For a seller, that table decides whether a current emission certificate travels with the title and registration.
Every car has a title
Utah requires a title on every vehicle operated in the state, whatever its model year, small trailers aside. So even a car that has sat for years in a Riverton side yard should have one to sign over. Lost? A replacement is $6.00, requested online or on Form TC-123. Car sitting for years covers the rest of a long-parked car.
Selling steps
- Sign the title; no notary needed.
- Within 48 hours, the buyer gets that signed title from you, with the current registration certificate and any emission certificate that applies.
- Complete Odometer Disclosure Statement TC-891 together when the car is younger than 20 years.
- Write a bill of sale (TC-843 is fine) and keep a copy.
- Take your plates with you.
- Report it sold: call 1-800-DMV-UTAH, write to the DMV, or use the Motor Vehicle Portal.
The Taylorsville office we checked, 4315 S 2700 W, Suite 1200 (801-297-7780), is about 11 miles north of central Riverton as the crow flies.
Getting an offer
Send us the car's details (model year, make, model), its odometer number, whether it runs, and the title's status, online or at (877) 421-6008. The truck can meet the car off Redwood Road, in a cul-de-sac or at a shop. South Jordan, 3.0 miles away, and Herriman have their own pages, and Utah has the statewide rules.
