Selling a wrecked or dead car in South Jordan

A crash or flood can leave a South Jordan car with Utah's salvage label. It comes down to value. A car is salvage when a safe repair runs past its market value. So does a car that an insurer or another state has labeled salvage. The label rides on the title and shapes what a buyer must be told.

Brands on a Utah title

Whenever a salvage vehicle is registered again or sold, Utah stamps its title with one of three brands: "rebuilt and restored to operation," "in a flood and restored to operation," or "not restored to operation."

Beyond salvage sits the nonrepairable category: a car worth nothing except as scrap or parts, or one its owner has permanently earmarked for parts, scrap or destruction.

The written warning you owe

Utah places the duty on the seller. Have a salvage certificate or branded title on a South Jordan car you want to sell? Give the buyer a written notice before the sale, and mention it in every ad. A spoken heads-up does not meet the rule. The salvage title guide goes deeper.

Local junk-car law

South Jordan's code did not surface in our online search, so Utah law stands in here, and the city may keep stricter local rules. A South Jordan car is abandoned under Utah law if left "on public or private property for a period in excess of seven days without express or implied consent," or alone on a highway over 48 hours.

Forms and the title office

Utah issues titles at the state level. We checked a Motor Vehicle Division office in Taylorsville, Suite 1200 at 4315 South 2700 West (801-297-7780), about 9 miles north of central South Jordan as the crow flies.

Begin with the title. A lost one can be replaced for $6.00 online or on Form TC-123. That same form's second part lets you release the car straight to the buyer, skipping a duplicate in your own name, which spares a step when the car is headed to scrap.

No notary witnesses your signature. You owe the buyer the title within 48 hours of closing, and a bill of sale, optionally on TC-843, documents the hand-off. Take the plate back unless it is part of the deal, so a stranger's parking tickets never reach you. Then report the sale online, by letter, with TC-502 or by phone. The Utah page has more.

Questions people ask

Does an insurance total make my car salvage in Utah?
Yes, if the insurer declared it salvage. Utah also counts a South Jordan car when a safe repair would top its fair market value.
Must I disclose a branded title to the buyer?
For a vehicle with a salvage certificate or branded title, Utah says the buyer gets written notice before the sale. Ads have to mention it as well.
What if the title to my South Jordan car is missing?
A duplicate is $6.00, online or with Form TC-123. Part two of TC-123 also lets a seller assign the car to the buyer and skip the duplicate entirely.
