Selling a dead or junk car in Ogden

Ogden gives a dead car at home six months, then it has to go. City code lets one inoperable car or small truck be stored in a back or side yard at the owner's house for no more than six months, on a legal parking slab. After that, or with a second car, it's junk on the premises. If those six months are nearly up, we buy whole non-running and junk cars across Weber County. You can sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

What Ogden counts as junk

Section 15-2-11 says junk or salvage material "includes, but is not limited to, inoperable vehicles, auto parts or parts from other types of vehicles, tires, machinery or parts thereof." Section 12-4-2 then names "Any abandoned vehicle or inoperable vehicle" among things barred from a property.

A narrow home exception lives inside the definition of a junk or salvage yard:

"One automobile or one truck with a capacity of one ton or less, which is inoperable, may be temporarily stored, rather than parked, in a rear yard or in a side yard other than a side yard facing a street, on property which is the place of residence of the owner of the vehicle for a period not to exceed six (6) months."

Break that into tests for your Ogden lot:

  • Just one. A car, or a truck rated at a ton or below.
  • Back or side. Never the front yard, and never a side yard along a street.
  • Owner's home. Storing a friend's dead car doesn't fit.
  • A legal parking slab beneath it.
  • Half a year, then the exception ends.

Section 12-4-2 also covers the park strip. Owners along a street may not let junk sit anywhere "from the property line to the curb line of the street or edge of the roadway." A dead car on that strip counts.

Notice, abatement, and who pays

Once an inspector flags a nuisance, Section 12-8-3 has Ogden "Serve notice in writing upon the owner or occupant of such land, either personally or by mailing notice first class," using the county assessor's address. The notice sets a deadline.

Blow past the final one and "the city may summarily and without prior notice to the owner or occupant proceed to abate the nuisance." Late cleanup doesn't cancel the bill: "the owner or occupant shall still be responsible for the costs incurred by the city in responding to the owner's or occupant's failure to abate the nuisance in a timely manner." The mayor can also adopt rules for disposing of seized property, "including the disposition of inoperable, unlicensed or abandoned vehicles."

Streets, and Ogden's airport

Section 10-5-20 is two sentences: "It shall be unlawful to abandon any vehicle upon any highway or street. A vehicle is presumed to be abandoned if it is left unattended on a highway or street for a period in excess of forty eight (48) hours."

Ogden-Hinckley Airport runs its own rules. A dead vehicle may stay there only with the city's written permission, for good cause, hidden from the public. Vehicles parked against airport rules can be impounded; getting one back costs a $50 fee plus towing and storage, and the airport director tries to reach the owner within 72 hours.

Lincoln Avenue title office and Weber emissions

Utah's Tax Commission issues titles statewide through its Motor Vehicle Division. Ogden's listed counter is 2447 Lincoln Avenue (801-297-7780), under a mile southwest of downtown as the crow flies. Hours and services: Utah DMV.

Weber is a testing county. The 2026 tables mark model years 2020 through 1996 required and 1995 or older not required. At handoff, an Ogden seller gives over the signed title, registration and, when it's relevant, a current emission certificate.

Selling from Ogden, step by step

  1. Sign the title. Utah wants no notary. With AND between owner names, both sign; with OR, one.
  2. Put that title in the buyer's hands inside 48 hours.
  3. Record mileage on TC-891 unless the car is two decades old or more.
  4. Keep a bill of sale; TC-843 is the optional state form.
  5. Pull your plate unless the buyer gets it. Utah warns that violations on a plate you leave may become yours.
  6. Report the car sold: MVP online, TC-502 mailed, or a call to 1-800-DMV-UTAH.

Missing title? TC-123 gets a $6.00 duplicate, and part two of it can sign the car straight over to the buyer. Scrapping it yourself is a different road: Utah bars dismantling until the title goes in for cancellation with a dismantling-permit application, unless an investigator has written the car up as abandoned and inoperable. Car sitting for years and non-running car go deeper.

Getting an offer

Ring (877) 421-6008 or send the form: year, make, model, odometer, does it fire up, and is the title in your name. Pickup can be from the slab out back, the curb, or a repair shop off 25th Street.

Questions people ask

Is a broken-down car allowed in my Ogden back yard?
One is, for six months at most. Section 15-2-11 lets an owner store a single inoperable car, or a truck rated a ton or less, in a rear yard or a side yard not facing a street, at the owner's own home and on a legal parking slab. Beyond that, Section 12-4-2 treats any abandoned or inoperable vehicle as prohibited junk.
What if I miss the deadline on an Ogden nuisance notice?
Section 12-8-3 lets the city clean up the nuisance itself without warning you again. Fix it late, and the code still bills you for what the city spent responding to the missed deadline.
How long may a car sit on an Ogden street?
Past 48 hours unattended, Section 10-5-20 presumes it abandoned, and abandoning one on a street is unlawful.
Weber County tests emissions. Does that affect selling?
Somewhat. Utah's DMV lists a current emission certificate, where one applies, among the papers an Ogden seller gives the buyer with the title and registration.
