Selling a junk Volkswagen Beetle or New Beetle

Power train complaints dominate the middle of the New Beetle's run. On the 2003, 2004 and 2005 cars, 379 of 956 complaints filed with NHTSA name the power train. As of October 10, 2026, no Beetle year tops the 2004, which has 361 complaints.

Two Beetles in the data

The original rear-engine Beetle ran from 1938 to 2003 and passed the Ford Model T in 1972 as the best-selling car of all time, Wikipedia says. This page covers the cars EPA lists from 1998 to 2019: the New Beetle, then the Beetle. In September 2018, Volkswagen said it would end Beetle production in 2019.

Complaint counts below are reports owners filed with NHTSA, not findings about every car. Later years have had less time to gather them. The file has no 2011 row; it jumps from 2010 to 2012.

1998-2002: electrical, air bags, fire reports

The first New Beetles list the electrical system first in 1998, 1999 and 2001. The 2000 is the outlier: 303 complaints, 61 naming air bags, 26 fire reports and 3 deaths. Fire reports across 1998-2000 total 63.

Brake lamp switches were recalled twice. Recall 03V265 inspected switches on 1998-2001 cars, and 06V183 installed a redesigned switch on 1998-2002 cars where the earlier fix was done wrong. Recall 02V031 replaced the ABS control unit on 2001-2002 cars because of possible short circuits inside it.

2003-2005: the power train years

This is where the Beetle file peaks. Power train leads every year: 125 of 334 complaints on the 2003, 142 of 361 on the 2004, 112 of 261 on the 2005. Visibility complaints run close behind, 47 to 57 a year.

Recall 08V178 is one to check on these cars. It covered 76,900 New Beetles (2004-2005) and New Beetle Convertibles (2003-2005) with dual-stage air bags whose frontal crash sensors could have a bad solder joint. Recall 04V586 replaced high-pressure pumps on 2004-2005 diesels that could leak fuel. And recall 03V508 sent 2004 owners a corrected tire label, because the original said five passengers instead of four.

2006-2010: the quiet end of the New Beetle

NHTSA complaints run from 125 on the 2006 to 30 on the 2010 (56 on the 2007, 60 on the 2008, 33 on the 2009). Recall 10V621 inspected the underhood fuel line on 2006-2010 cars with the 2.5-liter engine; the 228,236-vehicle campaign also includes Jettas and Rabbits.

2012-2019: air bags, again and again

Air bags lead the complaint list for every year from 2012 through 2018. The 2015 has 53 air bag complaints out of 99, and the 2016 has 44 of 59.

Three campaigns replace the driver's frontal air bag. Recall 20V785 covers 2012-2014 Beetles and convertibles: the inflator may explode as its propellant degrades. Recall 22V945 says the same for 2015-2016 cars. Recall 24V834 covers 2017-2019 Beetles, in a 248,330-vehicle campaign shared with some Passats. If one of these is open on your car, it matters more than anything else on this page.

Other work on these years: rear axle trailing arm inlays on 2012-2013 cars (14V656, shared with the Jetta), transmission oil cooler seals on 2014 cars with the 1.8T and automatic (14V182), engine software for a camshaft lobe issue on 2015-2016 cars (15V705), and an anti-theft module switch on 2012-2019 cars (19V615).

Year-by-year complaints and recalls

NHTSA complaint file, counted October 10, 2026. Campaigns often cover several years, so the recall column isn't meant to add up to 29.

Keep it or sell it?

  1. Air bag recall first. On any 2012-2019 Beetle, run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else. Our open recall guide covers selling with the work not done.
  2. Power train trouble on a 2003-2006? Power train is the part owners named most in NHTSA complaints for 2003-2005. The bad transmission guide explains the symptoms and the choice.
  3. Weigh the quote against what a running Beetle of the same year and miles sells for. Convertible tops, rust and missing parts all move the number; see what a junk car is worth.

Selling a Beetle whole

  1. Note the VIN and miles, what's broken, and if the car can roll. Say if it's a convertible.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked, whether in a garage, under a cover or at a shop, so the right truck shows up.
  4. Keep the Beetle whole. Tell us about any part that has already come off.
  5. At pickup, have the title and ID ready. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

No title? See the no-title guide. Also: the Golf, Jetta, Eos, or all Volkswagen models.

Questions people ask

Which Beetle model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2004, with 361 as of October 10, 2026. Then the 2003 (334), 2000 (303), 2005 (261) and 2001 (242). Later Beetles have far fewer, though newer cars have also had less time to collect complaints.
My 2012-2019 Beetle has an open air bag recall. What should I do?
Get it fixed. Recalls 20V785 (2012-2014) and 22V945 (2015-2016) say the driver's air bag inflator may explode because its propellant degrades over time, and 24V834 covers 2017-2019 cars. Dealers replace the part free. If you'd rather not deal with it, you can sell the whole car as it sits.
Does this cover the convertible and the Dune?
Yes. EPA lists the Beetle, New Beetle, their convertibles and the Dune under this model, and the counts here follow that.
Will you buy a Beetle that won't shift or won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
