Selling a junk or non-running Volkswagen Cabrio

Five of the Cabrio's nine recall campaigns are about fuel: a pump that could seize, a tank that could crack, a hose that could shrink and leak. Most of those land on the cars built before 1993. The later Cabrios drew more complaints, and the 2001 tops the list with 38. If yours sits with a dead engine, a torn top or a fuel smell nobody has chased down, you can sell it whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars.

Cabrio trouble spots, grouped by model year

EPA data lists the car as the Cabriolet and later as the Cabrio, sold from 1985 to 2002 in the minicompact and subcompact classes. We have no generation history for it here, so the groups below follow the model years. Each number counts owner reports sent to NHTSA, through October 10, 2026, and says nothing on its own about how dependable the car is.

1985-1989: the fuel system years

Fuel system complaints lead on the 1987, 1988 and 1989. On the 1987 it is 8 of 11 complaints; on the 1989, 7 of 10. The recalls match. Campaign 87V053 covered 1985-1987 cars because the pump inside the tank could seize in high heat, choked by a very fine mesh filter. Dealers fitted a modified pump and filter. NHTSA counts 278,520 vehicles in that campaign, and that number may include other Volkswagens, not only the Cabriolet.

Two campaigns dealt with a crack that can form next to a seam weld at the back of the fuel tank: 91V201 on 1987-1990 cars and 94V065 on 1987-1989 cars. Dealers checked with a special tool and swapped the tank if it was cracked.

1990-1993: air bags and a leaking fuel hose

The 1990 has four recall campaigns, the most of any Cabrio year. Air bags are its top complaint component, 5 of 8. Recall 91V215 says the air bag harness wire may have been routed through a dashboard crossmember opening where it could be pinched and chafed; the fix was a clip. Recall 92V058 covered 1990-1992 cars whose fuel hose at the fuel rail could shrink past what its clamps could hold and leak fuel. NHTSA counts 358,000 vehicles in that one, a whole-campaign number that may cover other models.

Two smaller campaigns sit here too. 91V162 (1990-1991) added a bracket so the water separator panel between the engine and firewall would not bend if someone leaned on it during maintenance. 92V064 (1991, 890 vehicles in the campaign) replaced front control arms that were welded wrong near the bushing hole, which let the bushing work loose.

The 1992 is the first year with fire complaints: 2 of its 9.

1995-2002: more complaints, fewer recalls

NHTSA holds no complaints filed under 1994 in this count. From 1995 on the totals climb: 21 on the 1998, 29 on the 1999, 38 on the 2001. Electrical system complaints lead on the 1997, 1999 and 2002. Structure leads on the 1998 with 5, power train on the 2000 with 5, and visibility on the 2001 with 6. The 2001 also has 6 crash reports and 7 injury reports, more than any other Cabrio year, plus 3 fire reports.

Only two recalls touch these years. 02V026 covered the 1998 for a fuel filler neck that could suffer abrasion damage if a flat rear tire was driven until it came apart; the campaign's 487,284 vehicles span several Volkswagens, and its remedy text names the Passat and Jetta. 02V244 covered 2000-2001 cars whose rear child seat anchorages were not marked the way federal standard 225 requires. Owners got a manual supplement and a set of guidance fixtures.

Fix it or sell it

Start with what is actually wrong. A Cabrio that sat for years with old fuel may need a lot more than a battery, and on the pre-1993 cars the fuel system is where the recalls clustered. Type the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup; it shows whether the tank, pump or hose campaign is still open.

Then hold the repair estimate up to the price of a running Cabrio in similar shape. If you have a project that stalled halfway, our old project car guide covers that case. If it simply stopped and sat, see sitting for years. For a smell of fuel or a known leak, don't try to start it to prove it runs; tell us and leave it parked.

Selling the Cabrio whole

  1. Note the VIN, the mileage and the faults. Say whether the top is intact, torn or missing, and whether the engine turns over.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it sits. A Cabrio under a cover in a garage, on blocks or in the yard is fine. Mention flat tires or seized brakes; the driver plans the loading around them. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it as it is. Sell the whole car as it sits, top, wheels and all. Tell us about anything already removed.
  5. Find the title. Paperwork on a convertible past twenty years old often goes missing; selling with no title explains the options. Bring a photo ID to pickup. For plates and paperwork afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Cabrio model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2001, with 38 complaints counted as of October 10, 2026. The 1999 is next with 29, then the 2002 with 23 and the 1998 with 21. Every Cabrio year has had more than two decades to collect complaints, so the counts are small across the board.
Were there recalls on the Cabrio's fuel tank?
Yes, two. Campaign 91V201 covered 1987-1990 cars and 94V065 covered 1987-1989 cars, both for a crack that can form beside a seam weld at the rear of the tank. Dealers checked the tank with a special tool and replaced it if the crack was there. NHTSA's recall search by VIN shows whether that tank work is still listed as open.
Will you take a Cabrio with a torn top that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Describe the top, the tires and the spot it has been sitting in.
Should I sell the convertible top or the engine parts first?
No need. You sell the whole car as it sits. Mention anything already pulled off up front, since it moves the offer.
