Selling a broken or junk Volkswagen Phaeton

Volkswagen said in 2002 that the Phaeton's Dresden plant could build 20,000 cars a year. By September 2006 it had built 25,000 in four years, running at about 6,000 a year. In the U.S. data the car is just as scarce: EPA lists only the 2004 to 2006 model years, owners have filed 7 complaints with NHTSA, and NHTSA shows no recall campaigns.

A rare car can still be a dead one. If yours would cost more to fix than it brings, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The car, from Wikipedia

One generation, built from November 2001 to March 2016 at Volkswagen's Transparent Factory in Dresden. It is a full-size luxury sedan on the D1 platform, and Wikipedia lists the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur as related cars. It came in two lengths, with 113.4-inch and 118.1-inch wheelbases.

Petrol engines listed are a 3.2 and a 3.6 VR6 and a 4.2 V8, plus a 3.0 VR6 sold only in China. Most were built in Győr, Hungary; the W12 was the exception. Gearboxes were 5- and 6-speed ZF automatics with tiptronic, and a 6-speed manual on the 3.2 VR6 only. Which of these reached U.S. buyers is not in our data.

Production ended in March 2016. From April 2017 the Dresden plant built the e-Golf instead.

Owner complaints, year by year

NHTSA's owner-report counts, taken October 10, 2026. Seven reports over three years can't show a pattern, and none of them is a rating of the car.

One of the seven reports the car being towed. None report a fire or a death. As a rule, the most recent model years have had fewer seasons for owners to write in; with the 2006 now twenty years old, that hardly matters here.

Repair, or sell?

There is no recall to lean on, so any fix is on you. Weigh a written repair estimate against what a working Phaeton of the same year sells for.

Selling it whole

  1. Collect the VIN, mileage and title, and note the engine if you know it.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked. This is a long sedan, with a wheelbase of up to 118.1 inches, so mention a narrow garage and whether it rolls. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it complete, and list any parts that are already gone.
  5. On pickup day, the driver needs the title, the keys and your ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance.

Questions people ask

Does the Volkswagen Phaeton have any recalls?
NHTSA's data shows no recall campaigns for the 2004-2006 Phaeton. A VIN search at nhtsa.gov/recalls confirms it for your own car.
What have Phaeton owners complained to NHTSA about?
