Selling a wrecked or non-running Volkswagen Arteon
Tires are what Arteon owners complain about most: 17 of the 43 complaints filed with NHTSA, including 11 of the 14 on the 2023. With a car this new, the counts are small. Being just a few years old, these cars haven't been out long enough for many reports, so a small number means less than it looks.

A short production run
Wikipedia lists the Arteon liftback as built from 2017 to 2023 in Emden, Germany, on Volkswagen's MQB platform, related to the B8 Passat, with 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engines. It replaced the CC and was followed by the ID.7. Volkswagen announced that 2023 would be the Arteon's final model year, citing poor sales. EPA's fuel economy file still carries entries from 2019 to 2024, as the Arteon and Arteon 4motion; the complaint file has none for 2024.
Recalls: three just for the Arteon
Three campaigns covered only Arteons, and they were small:
- 20V135000 (2019, 732 vehicles): the electronic brake booster's pressure input rod may be installed incorrectly. Dealers correct the mounting or replace the booster.
- 21V695000 (2021, 99 vehicles): the same rod's connection may be loose and could detach. Dealers tighten it.
- 21V274000 (2021, 149 vehicles): tire pressure sensors were calibrated wrong and may not detect a wheel's position after a tire change. Dealers replace the wheel electronics and valves.
Three more were shared with other Volkswagen and Audi models, so their counts are not Arteon counts: 20V716000 (2021 rear view camera software, 32,048 vehicles across Atlas, Tiguan, Jetta, Golf GTI and Arteon), 22V514000 (2021 infotainment software, 43,091), and 25V082000 (2023 camera control unit software, 29,569, shared with the Tiguan and Audi Q3). Five of the six recall notices say the fix is free of charge; the 20V135000 summary does not mention cost.
Complaints by year
| Model year | Complaints | Recall campaigns | Leading component |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 8 | 1 | Tires (3) |
| 2020 | 2 | 0 | Electrical system (2) |
| 2021 | 14 | 4 | Forward collision avoidance (5) |
| 2022 | 5 | 0 | Electrical system (2) |
| 2023 | 14 | 1 | Tires (11) |
The Arteon counts go through October 10, 2026. Each one is one owner's complaint, not a rating.
Repair or sell?
Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first, since five of the six notices above say the fix is free. After a crash, your insurer's numbers matter most; see wrecked or totaled. If you still owe on it, read still owe on the loan before you sell.
