Selling a junk or non-running Volvo S90

Two different sedans wear the name

NHTSA's complaint file holds S90 entries for 1997 through 1999, then nothing until 2017. The later car is the one Wikipedia describes: an executive sedan on Volvo's SPA platform, built from 2016 and listed as the successor to the S80 II. Wikipedia lists a 2.0-liter four, an 8-speed Aisin automatic and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. EPA names include the S90 B5, B6 AWD and T8 AWD Recharge.

Wikipedia says the Torslanda plant in Sweden stopped building the S90 by mid-2017 and production moved mainly to Daqing, China. Cars for the US came only from China. It ties the US exit to poor sales and new tariffs on Chinese-built vehicles, and says 2025 was the last model year.

Known problems, by era

1997-1999: brakes first

The older sedan holds 33 of the 70 complaints. On the 1998, 8 name the hydraulic service brakes, 5 name visibility and 4 name vehicle speed control. None of the S90's 15 recall campaigns covers these years.

2017-2021: software, seats and a fuel pump fuse

The 2017-2020 cars hold 30 complaints. The 2018 has 16, the most of any newer S90, led by "unknown or other" and the electrical system at 3 each. Recalls from this stretch:

• 17V104000: bolts holding the curtain air bags on 2017 cars may break.
• 18V800000: a software error in the Vehicle Connectivity Module, 2017-2019.
• 19V220000: front seat rail flange nuts may be missing, 2018-2019.
• 20V144000: automatic emergency braking hit a software and hardware mismatch, 2019-2020.
• 21V414000: the low-pressure fuel pump can blow a fuse and fail, 2019-2020. Dealers replace the fuse.
• 25V179000: on 2020-2021 S90 plug-in hybrids, the high-voltage battery may short circuit inside a module. Owners were told not to charge until the remedy is done.

Each of these campaigns named several Volvo models, so NHTSA's vehicle counts are not S90 counts. The battery campaign's 7,483 vehicles span the S90, S60, V60, XC60, XC90 and V90.

2022-2025: cameras, windows, engine software

Only 7 complaints so far, and these cars have had the least time to collect them. Campaigns 25V282000 and 25V908000 cover a rearview camera image that may not display on 2022-2025 S90s; each lists 413,151 vehicles across a dozen Volvo models. Recall 22V793000 covers an engine computer error that may keep the engine from starting on cars NHTSA lists as the S90L. One campaign is S90-only: 25V104000, 15 cars from 2025 whose windows may detach.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Years not shown have no complaints in the file. The S90 recall column adds up to more than 15, since one recall may be counted in more than one model year.

Fix it or sell it?

1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Several S90 campaigns are free software updates.

3. Does your 1998 S90 have a brake or engine fault? Get the shop's estimate in writing and weigh it against what a running one sells for. Repairs cost more than it is worth walks through it.

Selling your S90 whole

1. Jot down the S90's VIN, its mileage and the main problems.
2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
3. So the truck can load your S90, say where it is, if it rolls and if it has all four wheels.
