Selling a dead or high-mileage Volvo XC70

One model year carries close to three in ten of the XC70's complaints. The 2004 has 101 of the 351 that owners have filed with NHTSA, and the component named most on it is the fuel and propulsion system, with 24. No other XC70 year has even 40.

The XC70 in NHTSA's numbers

Here are the XC70 complaints NHTSA had on October 10, 2026. Each is one driver's report, and none is a proven defect. The final XC70 years have simply been driven for less time. EPA data has the XC70 from 2003 to 2016 with all-wheel or front-wheel drive, yet NHTSA also logs complaints and recalls under a 2002 model year. We show both.

Recall campaigns often span several years, so the yearly figures overlap. Across the whole run, the most-named components are fuel and propulsion (41), power train (40), suspension (34), electrical (33), the gasoline fuel system (24) and air bags (24).

Known problems, split where the recalls split

We have no generation history for the XC70 in our sources, so this page groups the years the way NHTSA's recall list does. Two big campaigns divide the model cleanly: one covers 2002-2007, the other 2008-2016.

2002-2007: air bags, fuel pumps, power train

These six years hold 230 complaints. Power train leads on the 2002, 2003 and 2005. The 2004 is different: fuel and propulsion (24), suspension (16) and electrical (14).

The recall that matters most here is 21V800. For the XC70, NHTSA's notice warns that the driver's air bag inflator could burst when it deploys, since its propellant breaks down over years of exposure. Dealers replace the driver's air bag for free. The campaign covers 2001-2007 V70 and XC70 wagons, 194,546 vehicles in all.

09V483 applies to 2002-2004 XC70s sold or registered in certain warm states: a dealer looks at the fuel pump and swaps in a modified one when it's needed. Its 158,733 vehicles include the S80, V70, S60 and XC90. Older recalls for these years cover a missing ISOFIX child-seat guide (03V284) and a Garmin portable GPS battery (10V566).

2008-2016: software, wiring and seat belts

The later years hold 121 complaints, and the recall list gets long. The 2008 alone has 8 campaigns, the most of any year. Many are software fixes:

  • 07V500 (2008): air bag control unit software that could deploy the side curtains late (1,601 vehicles).
  • 09V218 (2008-2009): the engine cooling fan could stop because of a fan control module programming error. 17,614 vehicles across the S80, V70 and XC70.
  • 09V343 (2009-2010): the central electronic module might not signal the fuel pump module (11,993 vehicles, shared with the S80 and XC60).
  • 10V579 (2011): an engine computer fuel cut-off setting that was too sensitive (6,046 vehicles across four models).
  • 13V377 (2014): central electronic module software on cars with keyless ignition (7,767 vehicles).

Others are hardware: an air bag clockspring connector (10V489, 2010-2011), a seat wiring harness that may not be attached right (12V075, 2012), and a starter motor fuse swapped for a higher-amperage one (15V555, 2016).

The widest is 20V378: dealers replace the front seat belt anchor cables on 2008-2016 XC70s. Its 308,260 vehicles span the V70, S80, S60, V60 and XC60 too, so that number is not the XC70's alone.

Fix it or sell it?

Start with what's free. Most of these recall remedies cost the owner nothing, so run your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before paying anyone. On a 2002-2007, the air bag recall is the one to confirm.

Then compare. Have the shop write down the cost of fixing what failed, then check what a running XC70 like yours goes for. When the fix would cost close to that figure, it's smarter to let the XC70 go in one piece. Our guides on open recalls, electrical problems and repairs that cost more than it's worth go further.

Selling an XC70 as it sits

  1. Write down the basics: year, AWD or FWD, VIN, mileage and the problem.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain where it's parked. All-wheel-drive wagons load differently when they won't roll, so say if the wheels turn and if the key works.
  4. Don't pull anything off your XC70, the catalytic converter and the wheels included. Tell us if anything is already off your XC70, since that affects our number.
  5. At pickup, hand over the title, show ID and leave the keys. No title? Start with selling with no title. Then see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Is my XC70 part of the driver air bag inflator recall?
If it is a 2002-2007, it is listed under recall 21V800. According to NHTSA, the propellant in the driver's air bag inflator breaks down with age, so the inflator can burst when the bag goes off. Dealers replace the driver's air bag for free. To check whether that repair was done on your XC70, run its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Which XC70 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2004, with 101 of the model's 351 as of October 10, 2026. Fuel and propulsion is its top component (24), then suspension (16) and electrical (14). The 2008 is a distant second with 39.
Do the late XC70s have fewer complaints because they hold up better?
The numbers can't tell you that. A 2016 has had far less time on the road than a 2004 to collect complaints, and fewer of them were sold in some years. Treat a low count on a late model year as incomplete, not as a clean record.
Can I sell an XC70 with recalls still open?
