Selling a wrecked or dead Alfa Romeo 4C

NHTSA holds exactly one owner complaint on the 4C: a 2017, filed under the engine, that reports a fire and a tow. There are no recall campaigns. One complaint is far too few to show any pattern.

What makes the 4C different

According to Wikipedia, production began in May 2013 at Maserati's plant in Modena, and the 4C was the first mass-produced Alfa Romeo sold in the US since the 164 left in 1995. The engine is a 1.75-liter turbocharged four that sits behind the cabin and sends power to the back axle via a 6-speed dual dry clutch gearbox. Its chassis is carbon fiber, built by the supplier Adler Plastic, and Wikipedia ties the car's yearly output to how many of those chassis could be made.

The 2018 coupe cutoff

Wikipedia says the 4C coupe was dropped for North America in 2018 because of FMVSS 226, the federal ejection mitigation standard. Because of low volume it could continue until the last compliance date, September 1, 2017. Every 2018 4C coupe in North America was built in August 2017 or earlier. EPA's data runs through the 2020 model year.

Complaints and recalls by model year

From NHTSA's owner complaint download, October 10, 2026; the 4C's whole record fits in three rows.

Repair it or sell it?

The gearbox and the tub are the two big questions on a 4C. If shifting has gone wrong, our dual-clutch guide covers how to weigh it. If the car has been in a crash, find out whether the carbon fiber chassis itself is damaged before pricing anything else; see wrecked or totaled. After a fire, the fire damage guide explains selling it as is. If your insurer paid out and you kept the car, see keep the check, sell unrepaired.

Selling your 4C whole

  1. Have the VIN, mileage and damage details ready. Photos of the damage help.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the 4C is, garage, body shop lot or storage unit, and if it can roll. It sits low, so flag any nose damage. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Sell the whole car as it sits. Leave the wheels and body panels on.
  5. Sign your 4C's title to the driver at pickup and show ID. Plates and insurance are in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Has the Alfa Romeo 4C had any recalls?
NHTSA lists no recall campaigns for the 4C as of October 10, 2026. You can still check a specific car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Why were there no 4C coupes built for North America after August 2017?
Wikipedia says the coupe was discontinued for North America because of the federal ejection mitigation standard, FMVSS 226. Low volume let it continue until the last compliance date of September 1, 2017, so every 2018 4C coupe in North America was built in August 2017 or earlier.
Will you buy a 4C after a crash or a fire?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Describe the damage and send what you know about it.
