Selling a junk or non-running Town and Country

On the 2008 Town and Country, 894 of the 1,943 complaints owners filed with NHTSA name the electrical system. No other year of this minivan has as many complaints. The 2010 comes next with 1,556, and 681 of those are electrical too.

What owners reported, by year group

Our sources give no generation history for this van, so the groups below follow EPA's model years (1984-2016) and the shape of the NHTSA data. Every figure is an owner complaint to NHTSA through October 10, 2026, a record of what drivers reported rather than a rating. The final Town and Country model years are younger vans, so owners have logged complaints for a shorter stretch.

1990s vans: brakes, belts and fuel

Brakes top the early list. On the 1993, 109 of 214 complaints name the hydraulic brakes, and on the 1992 it's 59 of 135. Several early recalls cover seat belts: 97V148000 and 97V149000 each list 1,100,000 vehicles, a count that covers every minivan in the campaign, not only the Town and Country.

The 1996 stands out. It drew 943 complaints, and 52 of them report a fire. The gas fuel system leads at 151, then engine cooling at 131. On 1996 Town and Country vans, recall 99V216000 warns of fuel leaking at the joint between the fuel pump module and the tank. Recall 00V268000 covers 1996-2000 vans with the 3.3L and 3.8L engines: nitrile rubber O-rings on the fuel rails can wear out and leak fuel under the hood. Its 1,163,000 count is for the whole campaign.

Air bags lead the 1997 and 1999. Two recalls deal with the clockspring in the steering wheel hub. On 1998-2000 vans a failed clockspring can disable the driver's air bag (04V480000). Dealers replaced the part only on vans with 70,000 miles or less.

2001-2007: air bags and steering

The 2005 has 857 complaints: 137 name air bags, 131 the electrical system and 98 steering. On the 2006, steering leads with 113 of 487. Recall 04V386000 says the upper power steering cooler hose on 2002-2004 vans with the 3.3 or 3.8 V6 can split and leak fluid.

2008-2016: the electrical years

These nine model years hold 7,840 of the van's 13,820 complaints. The electrical system leads every year from 2008 to 2014. Three recalls matter most here:

  • 14V373000 (2008-2010): dealers replace the ignition switch and key fobs because the fault can affect the air bag system. Owners are told to strip the key ring to the ignition key alone until then.
  • 20V396000 (2008-2010): the brand emblem in the steering wheel can come loose. Dealers replace the driver's air bag cover. The 925,239 count includes Dodge Grand Caravans and 2007-2011 Dodge Nitros.
  • 14V234000 (2010-2014): dealers replace the vent window switch on vans built from August 25, 2010 to October 31, 2013. Grand Caravans are in that campaign too.

On the 2015 and 2016, power train complaints move to the top: 101 and 165.

NHTSA complaints and recalls by model year

Tallies come from the NHTSA complaint file as downloaded October 10, 2026. The crash and fire columns count complaints reporting one. Minivan campaigns overlap model years, so the recall figures total far more than 63.

Repair it or sell it?

Weigh the repair quote against what the van would sell for running. Then check these, in order:

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2008-2010, ask a Chrysler dealer whether the ignition switch, key fob and air bag cover recalls are done.
  2. Electrical fault on a 2008-2014? Get a diagnosis before you decide. For when a Town and Country wiring fault isn't worth chasing anymore, see our electrical problems guide.
  3. Shifting trouble on a 2015 or 2016? That's where power train complaints peak. See bad transmission.
  4. Air bag light on? A clockspring or air bag recall may be open. Open recall explains selling with one not done.

If the numbers don't work, see when repairs pass the van's value.

Selling the van whole

  1. Write down the VIN, miles and what's wrong, and note if it starts or can roll.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it sits. Your Town and Country can be in a driveway, a tight garage or a parking lot. We bring the truck to it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave every row of seats in, plus the battery and wheels. Tell us about anything already removed.
  5. Hand over every key and fob you have, along with the title. No title? Start with selling with no title. Plates and insurance afterward: after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Town and Country years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2008, with 1,943 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 2010 (1,556), 1996 (943), 2005 (857) and 2011 (774) follow. Treat these as owner reports, not a reliability grade. A 2014-2016 Town and Country also hasn't been on the road as long, so owners have filed reports for fewer years.
What does the key ring recall on 2008-2010 vans say?
Recall 14V373000 says the fault can affect the air bag system. Until a dealer does the fix, the ring should carry the ignition key and nothing else. Dealers replace the ignition switch and key fobs for free. The 722,705 count is for the full campaign, so other models may be in it.
Will you buy a Town and Country that won't start because of electrical trouble?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention the no-start, whether the van rolls in Neutral, and where it sits.
Should I pull the seats or the battery before you come?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits, with every row of seats, the battery and the wheels in place. List anything already pulled in your offer request.
