Selling an old or broken Eagle Premier
Six of the Eagle Premier's twelve recall campaigns deal with brakes: a master cylinder, front hoses, a rear brake tube, an ABS hose, the ABS hydraulic unit and corroding rotors. That is a heavy brake file for a car sold only five model years.

A Renault-era car Chrysler inherited
AMC and Renault built the Premier, and Chrysler ran it after September 1987. Wikipedia credits the styling to Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign and Dick Teague. Wikipedia lists the Dodge Monaco and Renault 25 as related cars and puts the Premier on the Chrysler B-body platform. Engines were a 2.5-liter AMC four or a 3.0-liter PRV V6, with a 4-speed automatic from Audi or ZF.
It was built at Bramalea Assembly, a plant AMC opened near Brampton, Ontario, in 1986. Wikipedia says the car missed its sales targets: calendar-year 1989 production reached only 32,720. Production ended December 17, 1991, and the Eagle Vision replaced it.
Brakes, heater cores and belts: problems by years
Complaint figures are owner reports from NHTSA's complaint file, our copy dated October 10, 2026. Each campaign's vehicle total is for the campaign in full, and several reached cars other than the Premier.
1988-1989: the first two years
These two years hold 121 of the 217 complaints. Visibility leads both (14 and 17), with service brakes next (11 and 10). NHTSA files heater core and defroster problems under that visibility heading. Four 1989 complaints mention a fire.
The 1988 has seven recall campaigns on its record. Three are 1988-only:
- 88V002000: a misassembled master cylinder could block a fluid outlet port (5,000 vehicles).
- 88V087000: an overheated engine could push cooling pressure past what some parts can take, because the pressure cap vented too little (240,000 vehicles; the same campaign also covers the Eagle Medallion).
- 88V128000: park mechanism parts in the automatic transmission failed severe testing (95 vehicles).
Two hose and line campaigns reach these years. Front brake hoses on 1988-1990 cars could flex until the cover cracked (90V205000). On 1989-1991 cars, the fuel tank heat shield could hit the rear brake tube at full suspension travel and make it leak (91V027000).
1990-1992: steering, wiring and ABS
The last three years hold 96 complaints. On the 1991, brakes move to the top with 11.
- 1990: the lower intermediate steering shaft could separate at its rubber coupling (90V058000).
- 1991: the battery main feed wire could rub the air cleaner bracket and short (91V042000).
- 1991: the ABS high-pressure hose could leak or pull off at its crimped fitting (91V191000).
- 1991-1992: worn piston seals inside the ABS hydraulic unit could wear down its pump motor (96V099000, 321,000 vehicles).
Across the whole run
Three campaigns cover most or all of the run. On 1988-1992 cars the heater core's end cap could burst, letting hot coolant out inside the car; dealers added a bypass valve (94V006000). Automatic shoulder belts on those years could quit (95V213000). And 1988-1991 cars first sold or now registered in states on the campaign's list, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana and Maine among them, got new rotors with a corrosion coating (98V005000).
Complaints and recalls by model year
| Model year | Owner complaints | Leading components | Campaigns listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1988 | 54 | Visibility 14, brakes 11, power train 7 | 7 |
| 1989 | 67 | Visibility 17, brakes 10, engine and cooling 9 | 5 |
| 1990 | 25 | Visibility 6, seat belts 4, power train 3 | 6 |
| 1991 | 48 | Brakes 11, visibility 7, seat belts 6 | 7 |
| 1992 | 23 | Visibility 7, brakes 6, seat belts 3 | 3 |
Because one campaign can cover several years, that last column sums past 12. Wikipedia lists 45,546 Premiers built for 1988 and 41,349 for 1989. The 1992 is the last Premier made, so owners have had the fewest years to report problems with it.
Worth fixing?
Hold your Premier repair quote up against what a running Premier from that year sells for. If the estimate climbs toward that price, sell it whole.
- Look up the VIN with NHTSA's recall search to learn which campaigns apply.
- Soft pedal, leaks or a seized caliper? Our bad brakes guide covers when brake work stops paying.
- Hot coolant getting into the cabin? That is what the heater core recall (94V006000) describes: the end cap could rupture and let hot coolant escape into the passenger compartment.
- Just old and tired? See old or high mileage.
Selling your Premier whole
- Write down the VIN, mileage, engine and problems. Say whether it rolls.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is. Curb, garage or field, the truck comes to it, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Don't part it out first. If something's already gone, tell us.
- Pickup day: title in hand, license in your pocket. Plates and insurance questions are answered in after you sell.
No title in hand? See selling with no title. Other Eagles: Vision, Medallion, Talon, Summit, or all Eagle models.
Questions people ask
- Which Eagle Premier years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- 1989 leads with 67 as of October 10, 2026. The 1988 has 54 and the 1991 has 48. On four of the five years, visibility is the component owners named most.
- Is the Premier related to the Renault 25 and Dodge Monaco?
- Yes. Wikipedia lists both as related cars. Wikipedia lists AMC/Renault as its maker before September 1987 and Chrysler (Eagle) after. Wikipedia counts 139,051 Premiers and Monacos built at Bramalea.
- Does the Premier's original warranty still cover anything?
- No. The body had a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty and the powertrain seven years or 70,000 miles. Production ended in December 1991, so every Premier is decades past both.
- Will you buy a Premier with bad brakes or a leaking heater core?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say what's wrong and whether it rolls.
