Year by year in NHTSA's data
These Summit numbers come from NHTSA's owner complaint file as we downloaded it October 10, 2026. Each complaint is one owner's report, and the count is not a reliability rating. The newest Summits have had the fewest years to rack them up.
| Model year | Owner complaints | Components named most | Reports of a crash | Campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1989 | 12 | Seat belts 8, engine 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 1990 | 6 | Seat belts 4 | 1 | 1 |
| 1991 | 12 | Seat belts 8 | 1 | 1 |
| 1992 | 44 | Seat belts 19, structure 12, power train 6 | 1 | 3 |
| 1993 | 95 | Seat belts 62, power train 8, engine 5 | 1 | 3 |
| 1994 | 15 | Air bags 4, power train 4 | 3 | 1 |
| 1995 | 31 | Air bags 10, power train 8 | 9 | 1 |
| 1996 | 2 | Seat belts 1, steering 1 | 0 | 1 |
Across the run, 17 reports describe a crash, 14 an injury, and 3 a death. Since campaigns span years, the last column sums past four.
Known problems by generation
Each campaign's vehicle number covers everything it named, and Summits are only part of it.
First generation, 1989-1992
Wikipedia lists a 1,468 cc 4G15 or a 1,595 cc 4G61 four. Cars came from Kurashiki, Japan, and from the Diamond-Star plant in Normal, Illinois. The Summit filled the small-car spot at Jeep-Eagle dealers left by the Renault Alliance. Wikipedia counts 27,213 built for 1989 and 13,772 for 1990.
These four years hold 74 complaints, and belts lead all of them. Campaign 95V103003 named 1989-1991 Summits: a red release button marked PRESS could snap, and loose bits could foul the latch. With 920,000 vehicles in the campaign, Summits are a small slice. The 1992 also logs 12 structure complaints.
Second generation, 1993-1996
The second Summit took a 1.5-liter 4G15 or 1.8-liter 4G93, with coupes and sedans from Kurashiki. This run holds 143 complaints, and roughly two of every three belong to the 1993.
Two 1992-1993 campaigns target the driver's belt hardware:
- 97V063002 (46,000 vehicles): too much grease could warp the rubber cover over the door latch switch. Then the shoulder belt's anchor might stay parked at the A-pillar with the door shut.
- 97V073002 (24,000 vehicles): inside the driver's guide rail, a cable rubbing at the angled belt guide could abrade over time. Dealers installed a rail with a double-lip dust seal.
Air bags take the top spot on the 1994 and 1995, with 4 and 10. Nine 1995 reports describe a crash.
Campaign 98V168003 named all-wheel-drive Summits from 1992 to 1996, whose transfer case could seize for want of oil. Dealers checked the oil level and looked for leaks.
Is it worth fixing?
Have the repair priced, then look up what a running Summit like yours sells for. When the bill would take most of that, sell it whole.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall search for open campaigns.
- Shoulder belt stays at the door pillar with the door shut? On a 1992-1993 that matches the door latch switch recall (97V063002); have it looked at before anyone rides in it.
- All-wheel-drive car that binds or won't move? That fits the transfer case campaign.
- Parked for a long time? See car sitting for years and old or high mileage.
Selling your Summit as it sits
- Have the VIN, mileage and body style ready. Say whether it's all-wheel drive and whether it rolls.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. Lot, street or backyard, the truck meets it there, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Skip the wrenching. Wheels and catalytic converter stay on; tell us if anything's missing.
- The driver checks the title and a government ID. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.
No title? See selling with no title. Other Eagles: Talon, Medallion, Vision, Premier, or all Eagle models.
Questions people ask
- Which Eagle Summit year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- 1993: 95 complaints as of October 10, 2026, 62 about belts. The 1992 ranks second at 44.
- Why do so many Summit complaints mention seat belts?
- The complaint file doesn't give reasons. Still, three of the four recalls involve belts: buckle buttons on 1989-1991 cars, plus a latch switch and the driver's guide rail on 1992-1993 cars.
- Is the Eagle Summit a Mitsubishi?
- Mitsubishi Motors built it. Wikipedia lists the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Dodge and Plymouth Colt as related cars, and the first generation as related to the Mitsubishi Lancer and Space Wagon too.
- Will you buy a Summit Wagon that won't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, sedan, coupe or wagon, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
