Selling a dead or junk Genesis G80

Two years hold two thirds of the G80's complaints. Owners have filed 241 complaints with NHTSA on the G80 as of October 10, 2026, and 161 of them are on the 2017 (66) and 2018 (95), the first-generation cars. For those G80 years, two recalls ask owners to keep the car parked outdoors until it is fixed.

Two generations, two engine families

Wikipedia traces the G80 back to the Hyundai Genesis, which it replaced.

  • First generation (DH): built March 2016 to 2020 at Hyundai's Ulsan plant on the M2 platform, related to the G90 and Kia K9. Under the hood you'd find a 2.0-liter turbo four, a 3.3-liter V6 or a 3.3-liter turbo V6. Each one used an 8-speed automatic, with rear- or all-wheel drive. In the recall data these are the 2017-2020 cars.
  • Second generation (RG3): built since April 2020 on the M3 platform, related to the GV80. Engines are a 2.5-liter turbo four and a 3.5-liter turbo V6. The Electrified G80 added two motors and an 800-volt battery, then sold slowly in the US: 140 were delivered in 2024, and Genesis quietly discontinued it in August 2025.

Problems by generation

2017-2020: brakes module, starter and turbo oil pipes

Of the 241 complaints, 199 are on first-generation G80s. Electrical problems top the list for the 2017 (17), the 2018 (16) and the 2019 (8). The 2018 also has 12 complaints that name steering.

Six recalls reach these years:

  • 21V160 (2017-2020): a short circuit in the anti-lock brake module is possible, so the recall advises parking outdoors, clear of buildings, until the repair. The campaign's 94,646 vehicles include the 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis.
  • 24V107 (2017-2019): a starter solenoid that lets in water can short out. Same park-outdoors advice; dealers install a relay kit. 90,907 vehicles, with the G90, G70 and the older Hyundai Genesis included.
  • 19V538 (2018, 3.3 turbo): the turbocharger oil supply pipe may have a loose seal and leak oil. 8,059 vehicles, G80 and G90.
  • 24V191 (2018-2020, 3.3 turbo V6): the left turbocharger oil feed pipe may deteriorate and leak. 28,439 vehicles, with the G90 and G70 included.
  • 18V496 (2018): the passenger occupant classification system may think an adult is in an empty seat. 3,305 vehicles, a G80-only campaign.
  • 18V305 (2018): glass installed with the wrong primer. 37 vehicles across the G80 and G90.

If the engine on a 3.3 turbo car is the problem, see failed turbo. For shorts and no-starts, see electrical problems.

2021 on: fuel lines, fuel pumps and screens

The second-generation G80 has 42 complaints across 2021-2026, no year above 11. The recalls lean on the fuel system: a high pressure fuel tube that may not seal on 2021 2.5 turbo cars (21V208, 147 vehicles across the G80 and GV80), fuel pumps that may fail and cut drive power on 2021-2023 cars (23V630 and 24V282), and fuel that may leak at the fuel pipe and fuel rail joint on 2021-2025 cars (26V229, 94,760 vehicles across four Genesis models).

Seat belt pretensioners get caps under 22V816 (2023 G80 Electric) and 23V094 (2021-2023). Instrument panel display software is fixed under 25V105 (2023-2024) and 26V019 (2025-2026). The newest, 26V493, covers 42 of the 2027 G80, whose ignition coil ground bolt may be loose and cause a misfire or stall.

The 2026 has 9 complaints, including 2 crashes and the model's only reported fire. Recent model years are young, so their counts are still building.

Should you fix it?

Run your G80's VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls first. On a 2017-2020 car, an open brake module or starter recall is a free dealer repair. When no recall covers it, ask for a written quote on the G80 repair. Weigh that against the going price of a running G80 of the same model year. When the quote gets close, repairs cost more than it is worth explains why selling it unrepaired often wins.

How to sell a G80 as it sits

  1. Gather the VIN, the miles and what's wrong, including the engine (2.0, 3.3, 3.3 turbo, 2.5 turbo, 3.5 turbo or Electrified).
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say if the G80 rolls and where it sits: garage, driveway, street or shop lot. The truck meets the car there.
  4. Don't strip it first. Mention any part already pulled off your G80 when you ask for an offer.
  5. At G80 pickup, give the driver the title and let them see your photo ID. Missing the title? See selling with no title.

Other Genesis sedans: the G90 and the G70.

Questions people ask

Why does the G80 recall say to park outside?
Two G80 recalls carry it. On 2017-2020 cars (21V160), the ABS module can short circuit. On 2017-2019 cars (24V107), water can reach the starter solenoid and short it. Either way, the advice is to leave the car outdoors, away from buildings, until a dealer finishes the work.
Which G80 years have the most complaints?
The 2018 at 95 and the 2017 at 66, counted on October 10, 2026. Between them, those two G80 years account for 161 of the 241 owner complaints. Second-generation cars show far fewer, partly because they are younger.
Do I need to fix the G80 before you'll buy it?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits, running or not. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
