Genesis is a young brand with only six models, which makes it easy to cover in one page: who owns it, what owners have reported to NHTSA, and where every model fits.
A luxury brand that grew out of Hyundai
Genesis Motor belongs to Hyundai Motor Company, according to Wikipedia. The brand launched in November 2015. Between then and October 2018 it sold 206,882 vehicles. The G80 made up 127,283 of them, the G90 52,417 and the G70 27,182. By November 2025, cumulative global sales had passed 1.5 million.
The SUVs came later. In the EPA's fuel economy list, the first Genesis model years are 2017 for the G80 and G90. The G70 follows in 2019, the GV80 in 2021, the GV70 in 2022 and the GV60 in 2023.
Wikipedia's assembly list names one plant for all six: Hyundai's Ulsan plant in South Korea. That is the G70, G80 and G90 sedans and the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs.
Which Genesis models draw the most NHTSA complaints
Owners have sent NHTSA 969 complaints about the six Genesis models, in our count from October 10, 2026.
| Model | Complaints | In the EPA list since |
|---|---|---|
| GV70 | 248 | 2022 |
| G80 | 241 | 2017 |
| GV80 | 191 | 2021 |
| G70 | 143 | 2019 |
| GV60 | 77 | 2023 |
| G90 | 69 | 2017 |
The GV70 and the G80 together account for just over half of the total, 489 of 969. They got there on very different clocks. The G80 has had model years in the EPA list since 2017. The GV70 arrived in 2022 and caught up in about half the time.
The G90 is the opposite case. It has been around as long as the G80 and has the fewest complaints of the six. It is also the flagship, and Wikipedia's early sales figures show far fewer G90s than G80s on the road.
A recent model year has spent fewer months in owners' hands, so its count is still climbing. The same goes for the GV60 as a whole: its 77 come from model years 2023 on. Each complaint is one owner's account, and NHTSA has not ruled on it.
Selling a dead Genesis whole
Nobody expects you to diagnose a Genesis before selling it, or to strip parts off. A truck hauls it away complete.
- Find the model year, the model (G70, GV80 and so on) and the odometer reading.
- Tell us plainly how your Genesis is: does the engine crank, do the wheels roll, and is any panel or part missing?
- Find your Genesis title. If it's missing, see selling a junk car with no title.
- Give the address where the Genesis is parked, even if that is a dealer service bay.
If it was in a crash, our wrecked or totaled guide covers what happens with the insurer first. If it simply will not start, read car doesn't run. After the sale, deal with the plates and paperwork.

Questions people ask
- Will you buy a Genesis that does not run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, Genesis included. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Is Genesis part of Hyundai?
- Yes. Wikipedia lists Hyundai Motor Company as the owner of Genesis Motor, and names Hyundai's Ulsan plant in South Korea as an assembly site for all six Genesis models.
- Does a high complaint count mean a Genesis model is unreliable?
- No. Every Genesis entry is one owner's report to NHTSA, and none has been judged. Models that sell more and have been on the road longer collect more of them. The GV70 leads with 248, but the G80 has been in the EPA list five more years and sits right behind it at 241.
