What the XG is

EPA lists the XG as the XG300 and XG350. Wikipedia covers the XG as the third generation of the Hyundai Grandeur, coded XG. That generation's production ran from 1998 to 2005, with assembly in Asan, South Korea, among other plants. Wikipedia lists Delta V6 engines of 2.0, 2.5 and 2.7 liters and a 3.0 Sigma V6 for the generation. EPA data has the XG in the US for the 2001-2005 model years.

Problems by model year

2001-2002

The 2001 has 81 complaints, led by engine and cooling (15) and the electrical system (13). Its recalls:

  • 01V362: some powertrain control modules had a condenser installed incorrectly. Dealers inspect and replace the module if needed. The 1,963 vehicles in this campaign may include other models.
  • 02V105: movement of the side air bag wiring can turn on the air bag warning light. Dealers fasten the harnesses to the seat frames. The 145,355 vehicles in this campaign may include other models.
  • 01V307: the wrong tire pressure placard.

The 2002 has 65 complaints, led by air bags (13) and suspension (11). On 2002-2003 cars, 04V178 and 04V369 add a fuel tank valve so fuel can't spill in a rollover. Those campaigns cover 263,968 and 919 vehicles across several models.

2003-2005

Vehicle speed control comes to the front here: 6 complaints on the 2003, 17 on the 2004 and 35 on the 2005. Air bags rise with it, from 6 to 17 to 65. The 2004 reports 16 crashes, the most of any XG year. No recall campaign is listed for the 2005.

The recall that matters most on a car this age is 09V124. It covers 2001-2004 XGs from salt-belt states, where the front sub-frame can corrode. Dealers measure its thickness, inspect it and replace it if needed.

Complaints and recalls by model year

By October 10, 2026, NHTSA had these Hyundai XG reports on file. They come from owners and do not prove a defect or rate reliability. The 2005 XG has had the fewest years on the road, yet it has the most complaints. Two complaints are filed under model years outside the EPA range.

Worth fixing at this age?

Look the VIN up first on NHTSA's recall site. Then look underneath: on a salt-belt XG, sub-frame rust can end the car. Our rotted frame guide explains when it does. If not, weigh the written XG repair quote against the going rate for a running XG of the same year. Old or high mileage covers that call.

Selling the XG whole

  1. Note whether it's an XG300 or XG350, plus the VIN, mileage and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the XG sits and if its wheels still turn. Flat tires after years parked are common and worth mentioning.
  4. Leave it whole, catalytic converter and wheels included. Say what's missing.
  5. Sign the title over and show ID when the truck arrives. Title lost? See selling with no title.
