One model year carries most of the EX35's record at NHTSA. The 2008 holds 44 of the 81 complaints owners have filed, and it is the only year with recalls: all 3 of them. Its two leading complaint areas, steering and air bags, are the same two areas those recalls cover.

One generation, two engines

The EX was a single generation, coded J50, built from 2007 to 2013 at Nissan's Tochigi plant in Japan, according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia lists its platform as the Nissan FM platform and names the FX and G37 among related models. Wikipedia lists a 3.5-liter VQ35HR V6 and a 3.7-liter VQ37VHR V6 with a 7-speed automatic, in rear- or all-wheel drive. The EPA data carries EX35 and EX37 versions, 2008 to 2013. After 2013 the line carried on under the QX50 name.

2008: steering, air bags and three recalls

The 2008 has 11 steering complaints, 10 for air bags and 5 for the electrical system. Owners also reported 5 crashes, 2 fires and 3 injuries on this year.

  • 15V054, steering column. It covers 2008 EX35s with the power tilt and telescope option from the premium package, built June 29, 2007 to April 25, 2008. Dealers replace the steering shaft. The 16,973-vehicle count also includes FX35 and FX45 models.
  • 08V066, air bags. Incorrect software in the air bag control unit may keep the passenger air bag from working as designed. Dealers reprogram the unit. The 16,365 count covers the 2008 EX35 and the 2009 Nissan Murano.
  • 08V521, occupant sensing. Dealers test the signal between the occupant classification system and the air bag control unit with a special tool. The 204,361 count spans many Nissan and Infiniti models, from the Altima to the G35.

2009-2013: quieter years

The five later years have 37 complaints combined. The 2010 stands out with 15, led by power train (4). The rest have 8 or fewer each, and no recall campaign lists them.

Worth fixing?

Run the EX35's VIN through NHTSA's recall search first. On a 2008, an air bag light or a sticking steering column may tie back to a recall that was never done. See selling with an open recall if you'd rather not deal with it.

For anything else, a newest EX is a 2013, so the question is usually age against the repair. Ask for the repair figure on paper and line it up against a running EX35 with similar miles. What recalls apply to the 2008 EX35?
Three: 08V066 (air bag control unit software), 08V521 (a check of the signal between the occupant sensing and air bag systems) and 15V054 (the steering shaft on cars with the power tilt and telescope column). NHTSA lists no recalls for the 2009-2013 EX35.
Why is the 2008 EX35 so far ahead in complaints?
The file does not say why. It shows 44 complaints for 2008 against 37 for 2009-2013 combined, with steering (11) and air bags (10) leading. 2008 is also the oldest model year in the file, so it has had the longest time to collect them.
